The yellow vests protests, known in France as the *gilets jaunes*, were a series of grassroots demonstrations.

These weekly protests began on 17 November 2018 and continued until 28 June 2020. The movement was populist in nature. This means it was driven by regular citizens rather than political parties. The protesters sought economic justice and better democratic representation. They felt that the current system favored a wealthy urban elite. This movement became a significant moment in modern French history. It highlighted deep divisions between different social classes and geographic regions.

The movement was triggered by rising fuel costs and economic inequality.

Specifically, the government planned to increase taxes on diesel and petrol. These taxes were part of a carbon component intended to reduce fossil fuel use. However, many citizens saw this as an unfair burden on the working class. People living in rural and peri-urban areas relied heavily on cars for transport. They did not have the public transit options available in large cities. For these residents, higher fuel prices meant much higher living costs. The movement argued that these taxes hit the poor much harder than the rich.

The symbol of the movement was the high-visibility yellow vest.

Since 2008, French law has required all drivers to keep these vests in their vehicles. They are meant to be worn during roadside emergencies to ensure safety. Protesters chose this item because it was ubiquitous and inexpensive. It served as a unifying thread for people from many different backgrounds. The bright color made the crowds highly visible to the public and the government. It also acted as a distress signal, symbolizing the frustration of the people. This simple symbol eventually spread to protest movements in other countries.

In May 2018, the movement began to gain momentum through an online petition.

Priscillia Ludosky and Éric Drouet helped organize this petition on the website change.org. By October 2018, the petition had attracted nearly one million signatures. Alongside this, social media was used to organize mass demonstrations. On 29 November 2018, a list of 42 specific demands went viral online. These demands included a higher minimum wage and a reintroduction of the solidarity tax on wealth. Some protesters even demanded the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron. The movement was organized in a horizontal fashion, meaning it had no central leader.

The protests were often intense and sometimes led to significant conflict.

Demonstrations frequently involved the blocking of roads and fuel depots. These actions sometimes escalated into major riots. There were clashes between police and different groups, such as the "black bloc." The police used tools like blast balls to manage the crowds. This led to criticism from international media and politicians regarding police repression. Some incidents resulted in serious injuries, including the loss of limbs. Despite the violence, the movement remained a powerful voice for those feeling politically alienated.

Data shows the scale and impact of the movement was quite large.

Approximately 3 million people participated in the protests over time. At the beginning of the movement, support for the yellow vests reached 75%. This support was even higher in rural and peri-urban areas. Polls indicated that many protesters had not voted in the 2017 presidential election. This suggested a high level of political alienation among the participants. The movement drew supporters from both the far-left and the far-right. However, it rarely received support from moderate political groups.

The protests eventually declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic in France.

While minor protests occurred after health restrictions were lifted, the mass weekly meetings ended. The movement remains a key example of how social media can organize large groups. It also shows the tension between ecological goals and economic reality. While the government wanted to reduce carbon emissions, the protesters demanded a "real ecological policy." They argued that environmental taxes should target ships and airplanes instead of individual drivers. The yellow vest remains a lasting symbol of this social struggle.
