By 184 AD, the Han central government faced many serious problems. Powerful court eunuchs were abusing their authority over the emperor. These men, known as the Ten Attendants, enriched themselves through corruption. This corruption was linked to many hardships for the common people. Many believed the emperor had lost the Mandate of Heaven. This term meant the divine right to rule the empire. Natural disasters, like flooding along the Yellow River, made life very difficult. Disease outbreaks also occurred in years like 171, 173, 179, 182, and 185 AD. Some historians think these diseases might have been smallpox or measles. These illnesses likely spread along the Silk Road.

A religious group called the Way of Supreme Peace led the revolt. The movement was founded by three brothers from Julu Commandery. Their names were Zhang Jue, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang. Zhang Jue was known as the "Great Teacher." He and his brothers were famous for being healers. They offered free medical care to many poor patients. This work helped them build a massive following across northern China. Zhang Jue claimed to have a sacred book called the Crucial Keys to the Way of Peace. His followers were organized into thirty-six groups, or fang. These groups were led by commanders to prepare for change.

The rebels believed in a major cosmic change. They looked forward to the jiazi year, which begins a new cycle. They believed yellow skies would signal a new era of governance. This belief is why they wore yellow headscarves. Zhang Jue planned a coordinated uprising throughout the empire. He even had an advisor, Ma Yuanyi, working in the capital of Luoyang. Ma Yuanyi tried to gain secret help from trusted eunuchs. However, the plan was betrayed by a member named Tang Zhou. This betrayal forced the rebellion to start early in March 184 AD. Because of this, the rebels were not fully prepared.

The rebellion was widespread and very violent. Roughly 360,000 followers rose up at once. They attacked government offices and destroyed many buildings. The rebels focused on several provinces, including Ji, Jing, You, and Yu. In You Province, the rebels killed local leaders like Guo Xun. In Yu Province, the rebellion was very intense. Some areas, like Chen State, actually avoided the fighting. This was because a local leader, Prince Liu Chong, had thousands of skilled archers. The rebels were afraid of his military strength.

Emperor Ling took several steps to stop the uprising. He appointed He Jin as the General-in-Chief to supervise the imperial armies. He also sent out three separate armies to fight the rebels. These armies were led by generals like Lu Zhi, Huangfu Song, and Zhu Jun. They had a total of about 40,000 troops. In one major battle at Changshe, the generals used a clever tactic. They waited for a strong wind and set fire to the rebel camps. This caused great confusion and helped them defeat the rebel leader Bo Cai. A young officer named Cao Cao also served as a reinforcement during these battles.

The rebellion had a lasting impact on Chinese history. While the main fighting was suppressed by 185 AD, resistance continued for years. It took until 205 AD to fully subdue all resisting areas. The war weakened the imperial court even further. To fight the rebels, the government gave more power to regional military governors. These governors eventually became powerful warlords. This shift in power led directly to the Three Kingdoms period. The rebellion is also famous as the opening event in the historical novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
