To the east lies the Krasnoyarsk Krai. To the south is the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. The Nenets Autonomous Okrug and the Komi Republic border it to the west. The okrug is also defined by its proximity to the Kara Sea.

The geography of the region is shaped by extreme Arctic environments. Most of the land consists of arctic tundra and taiga. Tundra is a cold, treeless landscape. Taiga refers to thick forests of coniferous trees. The area features three major peninsulas: the Yamal, Taz, and Gyda peninsulas. The Gyda Peninsula contains two smaller peninsulas, the Yavay and Mamonta.

Water is a dominant feature of the landscape. There are nearly 300,000 lakes throughout the okrug. Notable lakes include Pyakuto, Chyortovo, Neito, Yambuto, Yarroto, and Nembuto. The Ob River flows through the region. It reaches the Kara Sea via the Gulf of Ob. This gulf, along with the Taz Estuary and Gydan Bay, defines the local geography.

In the western portion of the okrug, the Polar Urals rise sharply. These mountains contain Mount Payer. This peak is the highest point in the entire okrug. It is also the highest point in the whole Ural mountain system. The region is also mathematically unique. It is traversed by a line of equal latitude and longitude. This occurs at the point where 70°N and 70°E meet.

The history of the region is tied to its indigenous inhabitants. The Nenets people are an indigenous tribe. They have lived in this region for a very long time. In prehistoric times, they practiced subsistence hunting and gathering. This included the hunting of polar bears, or *Ursus maritimus*. This practice continues into the present day.

Administratively, the Yamal (Nenets) National Okrug was officially formed on December 10, 1930. It was established based on the former Ural Oblast.

The economy of the okrug is centered on massive energy reserves. It sits atop the West Siberian petroleum basin. This is the largest hydrocarbon basin in the world. It covers an area of approximately 2.2 million square kilometers. This basin is the largest oil and gas producing region in Russia. The okrug is a critical source of natural gas. In 2009, it produced more than 90% of Russia's natural gas. It also provides 12% of Russia's total oil production. The natural gas reserves here represent 80% of Russia's reserves. Globally, these reserves account for 15% of the world's natural gas supply. Major companies like Gazprom and Novatek operate extensively here. Some gas travels through pipelines like Nord Stream 1 to Germany.

The population of the region has seen significant changes over time. In 1960, the population was only 60,000 people. By 2016, it had increased to more than 530,000 people. This growth was driven by the discovery of natural resources. According to the 2021 Census, the population was 510,490. It is currently the only Arctic region in Russia not facing population decline.
