The XYZ Affair was a tense moment in early American history.

It happened between 1797 and 1798 during the presidency of John Adams. At this time, the United States and France were not getting along. France was at war with many other European lands. The French Navy began seizing American merchant ships in the Caribbean. This made trade very difficult and dangerous for Americans. President Adams wanted to find a peaceful way to fix these problems.

He sent a special group of diplomats to France to negotiate.

This diplomatic group had three main members.

They were Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry. The men arrived in Paris in early October 1797. They wanted to meet with the French foreign minister, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand. However, the French leaders did not meet them through official channels. Instead, they used secret agents to talk to the Americans. These agents acted outside of the normal rules of government. This made the American diplomats feel very uneasy about the talks.

The secret meetings led to a major disagreement. The French agents were identified later as X, Y, and Z. Agent X was Jean-Conrad Hottinguer and agent Y was Pierre Bellamy. Agent Z was Lucien Hauteval. These men told the Americans they must pay a large loan. They also demanded a bribe of £50,000 for Talleyrand. A bribe is money given unfairly to influence a person. The Americans were very offended by these demands. Pinckney famously replied, "No, no, not a sixpence!"

The news of these demands caused a huge stir in America. When the reports were published, the public became very angry at France. This political firestorm changed how people viewed the French government. It also caused arguments between American political parties. The Federalists wanted to build up the military to defend the nation. The Democratic-Republicans often felt more friendly toward the ideals of France. This division made it hard for leaders to agree on what to do next.

Because the negotiations failed, a small conflict began.

This was called the Quasi-War, which lasted from 1798 to 1800. It was an undeclared war fought mostly at sea. The United States used this time to grow its Navy. This event shows how important it is for countries to talk openly. When secret demands are made, it can lead to big fights. The XYZ Affair remains a famous example of how diplomacy can fail.
