The urban or metro area is expanding very quickly. As of 2018, about 2,743,200 people lived in these conurbating areas. These areas include the four districts and several counties. The city's total population reached 6,251,929 during the 2020 Chinese Census.

History shows that Xinxiang has been a stage for major shifts in China. During the period of Yao and Shun, the land belonged to Jizhou, Yanzhou, and Yuzhou. Ancient battles like the Battle of Mingtiao and the Battle of Muye occurred here. These conflicts helped change the course of Chinese history. The name "Xinxiang" was officially established in 586 AD during the Sui dynasty. In 960 AD, the Chenqiao Mutiny took place in modern-day Fengqiu County. This mutiny against Guo Zongxun led to the start of the Song dynasty. Between 1949 and 1952, Xinxiang served as the capital for Pingyuan Province.

The economy of Xinxiang is driven by heavy industry and textiles. The city is a well-known base for the cotton and textile industries. Major enterprises include the Golden Dragon Copper Group and Bailu Chemical Fibre. The Xinfei Electric Group is another important company. It is a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China. This group produces items like refrigerated trucks and military vehicles. The city is also a major rail junction. Despite its growth, the city has faced significant environmental and natural challenges. In July 2021, heavy flooding in Henan impacted the region. This event affected approximately 470,000 people and large amounts of cropland. Air quality has also been a concern for researchers. In 2015, a Greenpeace report noted severe pollution in Henan province. During that time, Xinxiang's PM2.5 concentration was 114.6 micrograms per cubic meter. This was over 11 times the safe limit set by the WHO.

Soil contamination was also identified in some areas. In 2015 and 2016, samples of wheat in Wangcun showed high cadmium levels. The government responded by purchasing contaminated wheat and changing land use. This demonstrates the ongoing management of urban and agricultural health.
