This was linked to the East Turkestan independence movement and radical Islam. These conflicts resulted in occasional terrorist attacks and clashes. The Chinese government responded with policies that some describe as human rights abuses. Some observers have even used the term genocide to describe these actions against Uyghurs and other minorities. This remains a complex and serious part of the region's modern history.
