Long ago, many people lived together.

Long ago, a group of people lived in the wild.

One leader was named Galdan. He was a very strong leader. He led his people to new places. He even took over Tibet.
But things changed for the group. A large empire called the Qing fought them. This was a very hard time.
Later, the people had a big fight with each other. This made them weak. The Qing took over their lands.
It is a big part of history. Many people lived in these lands long ago.
The Dzungar Khanate was a large empire. It was made by the Oirats. They were a group of nomadic people.
Around 1620, these people united in a place called Dzungaria. They grew very strong over time. A leader named Galdan became a great ruler. He was given the title of Boshogtu Khan.
Galdan led his people to many new lands. His empire reached from Siberia to Tibet. He also conquered the Tarim Basin.
But the Dzungars faced many fights. They fought the Khalkha Mongols. They also fought the Qing dynasty. The Qing was a large empire in China.
In 1717, the Dzungars took over Tibet. However, the Qing drove them out two years later. Later, a civil war broke out among the Dzungars. This made them weak. The Qing used this time to take their land. This was a very sad time for the Dzungar people. Many of them died during these wars. The Qing then took control of the whole area.
The Dzungar Khanate was a large and powerful nomadic empire. It was built by the Oirats, who were a group of Mongol people.

This empire grew through many years of change and leadership. Around the year 1620, the Oirat people united in the Junggar Basin. They were often called the Western Mongols to show they were different from others in the east. Later, leaders used a special title called Khong Tayiji. This title means "crown prince" in English.
One of the most famous leaders was a man named Galdan. He was born in 1644 and studied in Tibet.

However, the Dzungar Khanate faced many hard battles against other strong lands. In 1696, Galdan was defeated by the Qing dynasty. The Qing was a very large empire in China.
Finally, the empire came to an end during a very sad time. From 1755 to 1758, a civil war broke out among the Dzungars. This war meant they were fighting each other instead of staying united. The Qing dynasty used this chance to take over Dzungaria. During these fights, 70 to 80 percent of the Dzungar people died.
The Dzungar Khanate was the final great nomadic empire of the Oirat Mongol people.

The Oirats were a group of western Mongols with a long and complex history. They originally lived in the area of Tuva during the early 13th century. Their leader, Qutuqa Beki, submitted to the famous conqueror Genghis Khan in 1208. Over many centuries, the Oirats moved and fought for independence. They often struggled against the Khalkha Mongols and the Kazakhs. By 1620, the Oirat groups known as the Choros and Torghut began to unite in the Junggar Basin. This unification allowed them to declare independence following the Battle of Irtysh River in 1623.
Leadership in the Dzungar Khanate involved specific titles and religious connections. Early rulers used the title Khong Tayiji, which translates to "crown prince." As the empire grew, the leaders became more central to the Oirat tribes. A major turning point occurred when the leader Galdan received the title of Boshogtu Khan from the Dalai Lama in 1678. This religious recognition helped make the Dzungars the leading tribe among all Oirats. Galdan was a highly educated leader who had studied in Tibet. His rise to power helped consolidate the different Oirat factions under one banner.
Expansion was achieved through organized military campaigns and strategic alliances. Between 1680 and 1688, Galdan led his forces to conquer the Tarim Basin. This region is now known as southern Xinjiang. The Dzungars also fought the Khalkha Mongols to the east to expand their influence. In 1681, Galdan began a series of invasions into the Kazakh Khanate. He successfully seized cities like Sayram and Tashkent by 1684. These campaigns allowed the Dzungars to extract tribute, known as yasaq, from various groups like the Baraba Tatars.
The empire's history was defined by intense conflicts with the Qing dynasty of China. The Qing were a massive imperial power that sought to control the nomadic borders. In 1696, Galdan suffered a major defeat against the Qing forces. Although the Dzungars managed to conquer Tibet in 1717, they could not hold it. The Qing military drove them out of Tibet by 1720.

The end of the Dzungar Khanate was sudden and devastating. Between 1755 and 1758, a violent civil war broke out among the Dzungar people. This internal fighting weakened the state and allowed the Qing dynasty to intervene. The Qing took advantage of this instability to conquer Dzungaria completely. The cost of this conquest was incredibly high for the local population. Historical records indicate that 70% to 80% of the Dzungar people were killed during this period.
The fall of the Dzungar Khanate fundamentally changed the geography of Asia. The destruction of the empire allowed the Qing to consolidate power over Mongolia and Tibet. It also led to the creation of Xinjiang as a formal political administrative unit. The disappearance of the last great nomadic empire shifted the balance of power toward settled imperial rule. This transition ended centuries of Oirat dominance in the region. The legacy of the Dzungars remains a significant part of the history of Central Asian borders.
