Xingtai is a very old place in North China. Its history goes back 3,500 years to the Shang dynasty. Back then, it worked as a capital city. During the Zhou dynasty, a group called the State of Xing was founded there. The city had many different names over time. It was called Xindu during the Qin dynasty. Later, it was known as Xiangguo. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, it was called Xingzhou.
The city was once a famous center for making ceramics. These are items like bowls made from clay. During the Song dynasty, it was a very busy center for this work. New ways of making things helped move from proto-porcelain to real porcelain. People have found more than thirty old kiln sites in the area. A high-tech museum was opened in Neiqiu County in 2017 to show this history.

Xingtai is a prefecture-level city located in southern Hebei province, China.
Geographically, Xingtai sits in a specific position within North China. It shares borders with several other important areas. To the north, it meets Shijiazhuang and Hengshui. Handan is located directly to the south. The neighboring provinces of Shandong and Shanxi border the city to the east and west. This location makes it a central point for the surrounding regions. The city is part of the larger Hebei province in the People's Republic of China.
The climate in Xingtai is described as a continental, monsoon-influenced semi-arid climate. This is known scientifically as the Köppen BSk classification. The weather patterns are driven by large-scale atmospheric systems. During the summer, the East Asian monsoon brings hot and humid conditions. In contrast, winters are generally cold, windy, and very dry. These winter conditions reflect the influence of the vast Siberian anticyclone. Spring often brings large sandstorms that blow in from the Mongolian steppe. These storms occur alongside rapidly warming but dry conditions. Rainfall is highly variable and often unreliable. Most of the annual rain falls during July and August. Temperatures typically fluctuate between -6°C and 32°C.
Xingtai is recognized as the oldest city in North China. Its history stretches back approximately 3,500 years. During the Shang dynasty, the area functioned as a capital city. The name "Xingtai" relates to the State of Xing, which was founded during the Zhou dynasty. The city has held many different names throughout the centuries. During the Qin dynasty, it was known as Xindu. Following the Battle of Julu in 207 BC, it became known as Xiangguo. During the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, the Later Zhao capital was also located at Xiangguo. In the Sui and Tang dynasties, the city was called Xingzhou. Later, during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, it was known as Shunde.
One of the most significant historical aspects of Xingtai is its ceramic production. During the Sui, Tang, and Song dynasties, it was a prolific ceramics center. It rivaled the famous Yue ware produced in southern China. The Xing kiln developed new technologies during this era. These advancements helped the industry transition from proto-porcelain to proper porcelain. Researchers have excavated more than thirty different kiln sites across the city. To preserve this heritage, a large high-tech museum was established in Neiqiu County in 2017.
The city also has a history of significant geological events. A major earthquake occurred in the early morning of March 8, 1966. This event, known as the Xingtai earthquake, had a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located in Longyao County. This event was followed by five more earthquakes with magnitudes above 6.0. The strongest of these occurred on March 22 in southeastern Ningjin County. It reached a magnitude of 7.2. This series of quakes resulted in 8,064 deaths and 38,000 injuries. Furthermore, more than 5 million houses were destroyed during this period.
