This system works by connecting to many different services and tools. A major part is Xbox Live, which is an online service. It allows users to play games with others over the internet. People can also use it to download games through Xbox Live Arcade. You can stream music, movies, and TV shows through special portals. The system also lets you stream media from a computer. You can plug in tools like wireless controllers or the Kinect camera. This camera senses your body movements to control games.

Planning for this console began in early 2003. It was known by many names during development, such as Xenon or NextBox. Microsoft held a meeting for 400 developers in Bellevue, Washington, to get support. In August 2003, a company called ATI signed on to make the graphics part. The console uses a special processor called Xenon made by IBM. Some developers even used Apple Power Mac hardware to test it. Microsoft officially showed the console in May 2005.

The Xbox 360 launched in many different places around the world. It arrived in the United States and Canada on November 22, 2005. It reached Europe on December 2 and Japan on December 10. In its first year, it launched in 36 different countries. This was more than any other console had done in one year. Some early models had a problem called the "Red Ring of Death."

This meant the device had a general error, so Microsoft extended the warranty.

This console was a huge success for Microsoft. It is the highest-selling console ever made by an American company. It sold about 84 million units worldwide. In the United States alone, it sold 42.7 million units. The Xbox 360 was the best-selling console in the US for 32 months in a row. Microsoft released new models like the Xbox 360 S in 2010. They also made the Xbox 360 E in 2013.
