Xanthine is a special substance found in many living things.

It is present in most human body tissues and fluids. The name comes from an ancient Greek word for yellowish-white. This substance is part of a way the body breaks down purines. Scientists call this the purine degradation pathway. It is a very important building block for life.

There are several ways the body makes xanthine. One way is when an enzyme called guanine deaminase works on guanine. Another way involves an enzyme called xanthine oxidoreductase acting on hypoxanthine. It can also come from xanthosine through purine nucleoside phosphorylase. After it is made, a different enzyme takes over. The enzyme xanthine oxidase converts it into uric acid.

Many famous things are actually derivatives of xanthine. Derivatives are substances that come from a main source. Caffeine is one very well-known example. You can find caffeine in coffee, tea, and guarana. Theobromine is another derivative found in cacao and chocolate. Theophylline is also found in tea and yerba mate.

These substances often act as mild stimulants. They can help people feel more alert.

These xanthine derivatives can affect the body in many ways. They can act as bronchodilators to help people breathe. This is helpful for treating asthma or influenza symptoms. They work by opposing adenosine, which is a substance that makes you sleepy. However, very high amounts can be harmful to the body. High doses can change how the heart beats. They can also cause convulsions or upset the stomach.

Scientists have even looked for xanthine far beyond our planet. In 2008, researchers studied the Murchison meteorite. They found that xanthine might form in outer space. Later, in August 2011, NASA published more studies. They found related molecules like adenine and guanine in meteorites. This suggests that the pieces of life might exist in space.
