On November 10, 1965, a critic named Yao Wenyuan attacked the play. Yao was a member of the group known as the Gang of Four. He argued the play was a metaphor for Marshal Peng Dehuai. Peng had criticized Mao Zedong's policies and had been purged. Yao claimed Wu Han was comparing Mao to an unapproachable emperor. This attack was part of a larger struggle against the CCP bureaucracy. The controversy eventually led to the downfall of Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen. It also helped launch the ten-year Cultural Revolution.

Wu Han faced intense political pressure during this period. He admitted to ideological mistakes but denied being counter-revolutionary. Despite this, he was eventually sent to prison. There are different reports regarding his death in 1969. Some reports suggest he committed suicide while in prison. Other fellow prisoners reported he was beaten about a year before he died. It is also possible that his tuberculosis returned. His exact cause of death remains unestablished. His life remains a significant example of how history and politics intersect.
