Wrestling is a multifaceted discipline involving combat, sport, and entertainment. At its core, it is a martial art centered on grappling with an opponent. The primary goal is to gain a positional advantage through specific techniques. These techniques include clinch fighting, throws, and takedowns. Wrestlers may also use joint locks or pins to control their opponents.

While many people associate the term with professional wrestling, which is a form of athletic theatre, there are many legitimate competitive forms. These include styles like Greco-Roman, freestyle, judo, and sumo. Wrestling serves as a foundation for many modern combat sports and military systems.

To understand how wrestling works, one must look at the specific mechanics of the engagement. Athletes use various grappling-type techniques to manipulate their opponent's body. Clinch fighting involves close-quarters combat to control the opponent's movement. Takedowns and throws are used to bring an opponent to the mat. Once on the ground, a wrestler might use a pin to secure a victory. A pin occurs when a wrestler holds both of an opponent's scapula, or shoulder blades, to the mat.

This action, known as a "fall," can result in an instant win in many styles. Points are often awarded based on throw amplitude, the exposure of an opponent's back, or opponent passivity.

Modern wrestling is divided into several distinct disciplines. The United World Wrestling (UWW) organization categorizes these into international and folk wrestling disciplines. Three specific styles are featured in the Olympic Games: men's freestyle, women's freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling.

Greco-Roman wrestling is unique because it prioritizes upper body attacks. In this style, it is strictly forbidden to attack an opponent below the belt. This means wrestlers cannot use trips or leg holds. Freestyle wrestling is more permissive, allowing the use of legs for both offense and defense.

Other specialized styles include Sambo, which gained international status in 1966, and submission wrestling. Submission wrestling can be practiced in a "gi," which is a traditional kimono, or in "no-gi," where athletes wear compression shirts called rashguards.

The history of wrestling is incredibly deep and spans thousands of years. Cave drawings found in France suggest wrestling existed 15,000 to 17,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptian reliefs and Babylonian art show wrestlers using holds similar to those used today.

As the sport evolved, it became more organized and regulated. In the United States, the first organized national tournament took place in New York City in 1888. Freestyle wrestling became an Olympic event in 1904, and women's freestyle was added in 2004.

Finally, wrestling is woven into the fabric of human mythology and legend. Many ancient stories use wrestling to demonstrate power or character. In the Bible, the Patriarch Jacob is said to have wrestled with God or an angel. Greek myths feature heroes like Heracles and Theseus wrestling against beasts.
