arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

People sing songs to help them work. These are called work songs. Some songs help people move at the same time. This is useful for big jobs.

In many farms, songs have a strong beat. This beat helps groups plant seeds or pick crops. It makes hard work feel less boring. Some people use call and response. This is when a leader sings a part. Then the group sings back. This helps people talk and work together.

Sailors also sing work songs. We call these sea shanties. Sailors sing them to pull heavy ropes in rhythm.

African-American work songs have a deep history. Many of these songs come from African traditions. They used call and response to build a bond. Some songs used many rhythms at once. This is called polyphony.

Work songs can also be a way to speak out. Enslaved people used songs to share dreams. They even used songs to send secret messages. A leader might use a chant to move a crew. This helped them work as one team. Music makes hard work a way to be together.
