Churchill spent much of his life in politics. He was a member of Parliament for many years. He led different political parties. In 1940, he became the Prime Minister. This was during the Second World War. He helped lead Britain to victory in 1945.
Later, he became Prime Minister again. He also won a Nobel Prize for his writing. He was a very big figure in history. People in the UK still remember him today.

His father was Lord Randolph Churchill, a member of the Conservative Party. His mother was Jennie, the daughter of an American businessman. As a boy, Churchill went to several different schools. He eventually attended Sandhurst to prepare for a military career. 
Before he was a leader, Churchill was a soldier and a reporter. He joined the British Army in 1895 as a second lieutenant. He traveled to far places like India and the Sudan. 

Churchill's political career had many ups and downs. He was a member of the Conservative Party for most of his life. However, he joined the Liberal Party from 1904 to 1924. He held many important jobs, such as Home Secretary. During the First World War, he was the First Lord of the Admiralty. He later served in many roles under different leaders. In the 1930s, he warned that Germany was becoming a military threat. This helped him become Prime Minister in May 1940. 
As Prime Minister, Churchill led Britain through the Second World War. He helped the Allied powers fight against the Axis powers. This hard work led to victory in 1945.

Before entering politics, Churchill saw action in many different places. He traveled to Cuba to observe the War of Independence. He also served in India for 19 months. While in India, he practiced self-education by reading many books. He studied authors like Charles Darwin and Plato. 
During the Second Boer War in South Africa, Churchill became very famous. While working as a journalist, he was captured by Boer forces. He was held as a prisoner of war in a camp in Pretoria. Churchill escaped by hiding on freight trains and in a mine. He eventually reached safety in Portuguese East Africa. After this, he was elected as a Conservative MP in 1900 at age 25. He later switched to the Liberal Party in 1904.
Churchill held many high-ranking government positions over several decades. He served as President of the Board of Trade and as Home Secretary. As Home Secretary, he supported prison reform and social security for workers. During the First World War, he was the First Lord of the Admiralty. He oversaw the naval attack on the Dardanelles, which was a disaster. Because of this, he was demoted and later resigned from the government. In 1917, he returned to serve in several different ministerial roles.
In the 1930s, Churchill was out of government during his "wilderness years." 
Churchill's influence continued even after the war ended. He served as the Leader of the Opposition after the 1945 election. He famously warned about an "iron curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe. This was part of the early Cold War period. He also promoted the idea of European unity. In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his writing.
