A windmill is a big machine.

The wind pushes its large sails. This helps grind grain into food. It can also move water.

Long ago, people in Persia used them. These mills had sails that moved flat. They used them to pump water. They also used them to grind grain.

Later, new mills were built in Europe. These mills had sails that moved up and down. Some had a large post to hold them. This helped them face the wind.

Some mills were built like tall towers.

These could be very tall. Tall sails work even in low wind. They are very strong.

In some lands, sails send signals. A plus sign means the mill is open. An X sign means it is closed. Windmills are very clever machines!
