It was the very first cave to become a national park in the world. President Theodore Roosevelt established the park on January 3, 1903. This made it the sixth national park in the United States. The cave is famous for being a "breathing" cave. This means air moves in and out of the openings.

This happens to balance the air pressure inside and outside. When outside pressure is higher, air flows into the cave. When inside pressure is higher, air flows out. This movement can create real wind in the passages.

Inside the cave, you will find amazing rock shapes. One special feature is called boxwork. These are tiny calcite fins that look like small boxes. About 95 percent of the world's boxwork is found here. You can also find frostwork and helictite bushes. The cave is the sixth longest in the world. It is also the densest cave system on Earth. This means it has a huge amount of passage volume.

Most of these caves formed in Mississippian Pahasapa Limestone. This rock was once part of an ancient inland sea. Over a long time, the limestone dissolved to make holes. These holes grew into the massive cave system we see today.

Native American tribes knew about this area for a long time. The Lakota people call the cave Washun Niya. To them, the cave is a sacred place. Their stories say the first human, Tokahe, emerged from the cave. The land around the cave provided many resources for survival. It was a great place for hunting and winter camps. Later, white Americans discovered the cave in 1881. Two brothers named Tom and Jesse Bingham heard the wind. The rushing air was so strong it blew Tom's hat off!

After the Bingham brothers, other people began to explore. The South Dakota Mining Company hired Jesse D. McDonald in 1889. They wanted to find minerals, but they found nothing valuable. Instead, the McDonald family began to show the cave to tourists. Alvin McDonald and his brother Elmer helped explore the dark paths. By February 1892, the cave was open for visitors. People had to explore the cave using only candlelight. It was a hard job to crawl through narrow spaces. The standard tour fee back then was only one dollar.

Above the cave, the park has a large prairie. This is the largest natural mixed grass prairie in the U.S. Many animals live here, like elk, coyotes, and badgers. One very important group is the Wind Cave bison herd. This herd is one of only four pure herds left in North America. Some animals here, like the black-footed ferret, are endangered. This means there are not many of them left. Visitors can visit the park to see these animals and the beautiful land.

Wind Cave National Park is a unique protected area in western South Dakota. Located north of Hot Springs, it was established on January 3, 1903, by President Theodore Roosevelt. This designation made it the sixth national park in the United States. It also holds the distinction of being the first cave to become a national park anywhere in the world. The park is famous for its incredible geology and its vast underground passages.

The cave is most famous for being a "breathing" cave. This phenomenon occurs because air moves continually into or out of the cave passages. This movement happens to equalize the atmospheric pressure between the cave and the outside air. When the air pressure outside is higher than the pressure inside, air flows into the cave. This raises the cave's internal pressure to match the outside. Conversely, if the internal pressure is higher, air flows out to lower it. Because Wind Cave is a large system with only a few small openings, this breathing is very obvious. Rapid weather changes in South Dakota can cause fast barometric changes. These changes can cause air to rush out of the openings, creating wind.

Inside the cave, the geology is truly remarkable. The system is notable for its calcite formations known as boxwork. Boxwork consists of intersecting calcite fins that form open chambers. These fins protrude from the surrounding bedrock by 0.6 to 1.2 meters. Wind Cave is home to approximately 95 percent of the world's discovered boxwork formations. Visitors can also find frostwork, cave popcorn, and helictite bushes. Other formations include moonmilk, which is found on many surfaces, and calcite rafts in the lower levels.

The cave system formed through complex geological processes. The passages are located in the upper 76 meters of the Mississippian Pahasapa Limestone. This limestone was originally deposited in an ancient inland sea. During this time, lenses of chert, gypsum, and anhydrite were also deposited. When sea levels dropped, the limestone dissolved to create a Kaskaskia paleokarst terrain. This terrain included sinkholes and solution fissures. Later, geologic uplift during the Laramide Orogeny lowered the water table. This process drained the cave system and helped enlarge it. Today, the water level sits 150 meters below the surface.

The history of the area is deeply tied to the Lakota people. They call the cave Washun Niya and consider it a sacred site. According to Lakota oral history, the first human, Tokahe, emerged from the cave. This symbolizes an emergence from the underworld. The area surrounding the cave also served as a vital resource for survival. The Lakota used these lands for hunting and winter camps. However, the Lakota faced dispossession of their lands through various treaties and acts. The 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie redefined Lakota borders in the Black Hills. Later, the Dawes Act of 1877 helped open the site to settlers.

White Americans first documented the cave in 1881. Brothers Tom and Jesse Bingham heard wind rushing from a hole in the ground. The wind was so strong it reportedly blew Tom's hat off. In 1889, the South Dakota Mining Company hired Jesse D. McDonald to oversee a mining claim. While they found no valuable minerals, the McDonald family began developing the cave for tourism. Alvin and Elmer McDonald helped explore the passages. By February 1892, the cave was open to the public. Early tourists explored the dark cave by candlelight. The standard tour fee at that time was $1.00.

Wind Cave is a massive system with significant measurements. It is recognized as the densest cave system in the world. This means it has the greatest passage volume per cubic mile. It is also the sixth longest cave in the world and the third longest in the United States. Above ground, the park protects the largest remaining natural mixed grass prairie in the U.S. This ecosystem supports diverse wildlife like elk, coyotes, and badgers. The Wind Cave bison herd is particularly important. It is one of only four free-roaming, genetically pure bison herds in North America. Some species, such as the black-footed ferret and the whooping crane, are currently listed as endangered.
