William Tolbert was a leader in Liberia.

He was born in 1913. He was part of a large family. He served as vice president starting in 1952. When President William Tubman died in 1971, Tolbert became the president.

Tolbert wanted to change how the country worked. He tried to include more local groups in the government. He also made a rule that a president could only serve eight years. He wanted to stop the old way of leaders staying in power too long.
