During the Civil War, Jenney served as an engineer in the Union Army. He designed fortifications for famous generals. After the war, he moved to Chicago in 1867. He started an office for building commercial structures. He also taught architecture at the University of Michigan.

Jenney designed many important buildings in Chicago. He built the Manhattan Building and the Ludington Building in 1891. Both of these are now National Historic Landmarks.

Jenney’s most significant achievement was the metal-framed skyscraper. He designed the ten-story Home Insurance Building in Chicago. It was constructed between 1884 and 1885. This building was the first to use a complete metal skeleton. This skeleton consisted of a grid of iron columns, girders, beams, and floor joists. Unlike older methods, this structure did not rely on thick walls for support. It was the world's first fully metal-framed building.

The mechanism of his design relied on weight reduction. Traditional buildings used heavy masonry, such as stone and brick, to hold up upper levels. Jenney used metal columns and beams to carry the load instead. This metal frame weighed only one-third as much as a masonry building of the same size. Reducing the weight allowed architects to design much taller structures. To address fire safety, he used masonry, iron, and terra cotta for flooring and partitions. He later demonstrated this system in the Second Leiter Building from 1889 to 1891.

Jenney’s education provided the foundation for these discoveries. He was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, on September 25, 1832. He studied at Phillips Academy and later at Harvard. However, he moved to Paris to attend École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. In Paris, he studied engineering and architecture. He learned advanced iron construction techniques there. He also studied the functionalist doctrines of Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand. Interestingly, he was a classmate of Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower.

Jenney’s career included service during the American Civil War. He joined the Union Army as an engineer in 1861. He designed fortifications for Generals Sherman and Grant. By the end of the war, he was a major and the Engineer-in-Charge at Nashville's headquarters. After the war, he moved to Chicago in 1867. He opened an architectural office focused on urban planning and commercial buildings. He also taught architecture at the University of Michigan during the late 1870s.

His professional legacy includes many famous landmarks. He designed the Manhattan Building and the Ludington Building in 1891. Both are now National Historic Landmarks.
