Jenney died in Los Angeles in 1907. His original notebooks are kept at the Art Institute of Chicago. These notes include his sketches for the first skyscraper.

Jenney used metal columns and beams to carry the load instead. This metal frame weighed only one-third as much as a masonry building of the same size. Reducing the weight allowed architects to design much taller structures. To address fire safety, he used masonry, iron, and terra cotta for flooring and partitions. He later demonstrated this system in the Second Leiter Building from 1889 to 1891.
Jenney’s education provided the foundation for these discoveries. He was born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, on September 25, 1832. He studied at Phillips Academy and later at Harvard. However, he moved to Paris to attend École Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. In Paris, he studied engineering and architecture. He learned advanced iron construction techniques there. He also studied the functionalist doctrines of Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand. Interestingly, he was a classmate of Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower. 
Jenney’s career included service during the American Civil War. He joined the Union Army as an engineer in 1861. He designed fortifications for Generals Sherman and Grant. By the end of the war, he was a major and the Engineer-in-Charge at Nashville's headquarters. After the war, he moved to Chicago in 1867. He opened an architectural office focused on urban planning and commercial buildings. He also taught architecture at the University of Michigan during the late 1870s. 
His professional legacy includes many famous landmarks. He designed the Manhattan Building and the Ludington Building in 1891. Both are now National Historic Landmarks. He also designed the Horticultural Building for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Jenney was highly respected by his peers. He became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1885. He even served as the organization's first Vice President from 1898 to 1899. 
Many leaders in architecture began their careers under Jenney. Future famous architects like Louis Sullivan and Daniel Burnham worked as apprentices on his staff. His work connected engineering precision with architectural beauty. Jenney died in Los Angeles on June 15, 1907. His ashes were scattered near his wife's grave in Chicago. Today, the Art Institute of Chicago holds his original notebooks. These include his structural calculations and a sketch titled "Key to the sky scraper."
