He was responsible for constructing the Chicago Stock Yards in 1865 and the Kansas City Stockyards in 1871. One of his most significant achievements was the Hannibal Bridge, completed in 1869. 
Chanute also used engineering to solve practical problems for the railroad industry. He developed a method for pressure-treating wooden railroad ties with an antiseptic. This process increased the lifespan of the wood and reduced replacement costs for companies. To track how long these wooden items lasted, he introduced the railroad date nail in the United States. These technical improvements showed his ability to apply scientific principles to everyday industrial needs. He eventually retired from the Erie Railway in 1883 to focus on new interests.
Chanute's interest in aviation began in 1856 after he watched a balloon ascend in Peoria, Illinois. After retiring from engineering, he applied his mathematical background to the study of flight. He collected data from experimenters worldwide to create a systematic survey of research. He published his findings in the Railroad and Engineering Journal between 1891 and 1893. These articles were later compiled into his influential 1894 book, Progress in Flying Machines. This book served as a global resource for the study of fixed-wing, heavier-than-air aviation.
In 1896, Chanute moved from theory to physical testing through glider experiments. He partnered with Augustus M. Herring and William Avery to test new designs. They conducted these tests in the sand dunes of Miller Beach, Indiana, near Lake Michigan. 

Chanute was a major supporter of the Wright brothers during their early years. He provided them with encouragement and helped publicize their important work. He visited their camp near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1901, 1902, and 1903. The brothers and Chanute exchanged hundreds of letters between 1900 and 1910. However, they sometimes disagreed on how to share information. Chanute believed in sharing knowledge freely, while the Wright brothers preferred to keep their control methods secret. Even with these tensions, Wilbur Wright attended Chanute's memorial service after his death in 1910.
Chanute's legacy is preserved through many names, places, and awards. The town of Chanute, Kansas, is named in his honor.
