He also dealt with complex crises in Egypt and Ireland. In Ireland, he worked to improve legal rights for tenant farmers. Later, he proposed "home rule" to give Ireland more self-governance. Although he was defeated in the House of Commons on this issue, it remained a central part of his legacy.

Gladstone remained a powerful figure even in his final years.
