He holds a unique place in history because he bridged two different eras of exploration. He combined the adventurous, piratical style of the 16th-century era with the scientific inquiry of the 18th century. Dampier was the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. He was also the first Englishman to explore parts of what is now known as Australia. His work helped introduce many new things to the European world.\n\nDampier acted as a naturalist, which is a person who studies plants and animals. During his many voyages, he identified and named various plants, animals, and foods. He was among the first English writers to use words like \"avocado,\" \"barbecue,\" and \"chopsticks.\"

He even provided the first European description of how to make guacamole from avocados. He also named the breadfruit plant for European audiences. Dampier frequently documented the tastes of foreign foods, such as manatee and flamingo, to help others understand them.\n\nHis early life began in Somerset, England, where he attended King's School in Bruton. Before becoming a famous explorer, he worked on merchant voyages to Newfoundland and Java. He also joined the Royal Navy in 1673, though illness cut his service short. After trying different jobs like logging in Mexico, he returned to the sea. In 1679, he joined a crew of buccaneers, or pirates, led by Captain Bartholomew Sharp.
