William Alfred Fowler was a famous American astrophysicist. An astrophysicist is a scientist who studies how space works. Fowler spent his life studying the stars. He wanted to know how they create the building blocks of our world. These building blocks are called chemical elements. He studied nuclear reactions inside stars to find the answer.

Fowler studied how stars make elements through a process called stellar nucleosynthesis. This is the way stars create new elements. Inside a star, nuclear reactions happen. These reactions change one thing into another. This process creates almost all the chemical elements in the universe. It only leaves out the very lightest ones. These reactions are what make stars shine and grow.
