He served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands for ten years. His leadership helped rebuild the country after World War II. He is most famous for building the Dutch welfare state. This is a system where the government provides support to its citizens. This support includes things like healthcare, money for the elderly, and help for families. Many scholars and the public consider his time in office to be one of the best in Dutch history.

Drees's journey began with a focus on social fairness.

He was born in Amsterdam on July 5, 1886. His father died when Drees was only five years old. This left his mother and siblings in a difficult financial situation. Drees worked hard to finish his education in accountancy. He worked as a bank teller before becoming a stenographer in The Hague. A stenographer is someone who writes down spoken words very quickly. This job allowed him to see how the government functioned every day.

His political career grew through many different roles. He joined the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) at age eighteen.

He served in the municipal council of The Hague for many years. He also worked in the Provincial Council of South Holland. In 1946, he helped found the Labour Party (PvdA). He became its very first leader. During the German occupation in World War II, Drees faced great danger. He was held as a hostage in a concentration camp. He was eventually released due to poor health, but he continued to work secretly to prepare for the country's liberation.

After the war, Drees rose to the highest level of government. He became the Deputy Prime Minister in 1945. In 1948, he became the Prime Minister.

He led four different cabinets between 1948 and 1958. These cabinets were often called "Roman/Red" coalitions. This name came from the different political parties that worked together. They included the Catholic People's Party and the Labour Party. Drees was known as a skillful team leader and an effective manager. He used a policy of austerity to help the economy recover.

Austerity means being very careful with money and avoiding waste. This helped the Netherlands grow after the destruction of the war. During his leadership, the country also dealt with the decolonization of the Dutch East Indies. He also managed the country through the North Sea flood of 1953. This was a massive and dangerous flood that affected many people.

Drees passed many important laws to protect citizens.

In 1949, he helped pass a law for industry pensions. In 1956, the General Old Age Pensions Act was introduced. This law gave a universal pension to all residents at age 65. This was a right for everyone, regardless of their past work. He also helped pass laws for health insurance and family allowances. These laws provided extra money to help families with children and disabled children. These reforms created a safety net for the people.

Drees also helped the Netherlands connect with the rest of the world. His governments were involved in forming several international groups. These included Benelux, which is a union between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. He also worked with groups like NATO and the European Economic Community. These organizations helped countries cooperate on defense and trade. By working with others, Drees helped ensure the Netherlands was part of a stable and growing Europe.

Even after retiring from politics, Drees remained a respected figure.
