Wilhelm was a brave soldier.

Wilhelm I was a leader who helped make Germany a single nation.

Wilhelm I was a very important leader in European history.
Wilhelm grew up in a royal family called the House of Hohenzollern.
His journey to the throne happened in several steps. First, his older brother became King of Prussia in 1840. This made Wilhelm the person next in line for the crown. In 1858, his brother became very sick and could not rule. Wilhelm then became the Prince Regent to help lead the land. Finally, in 1861, his brother died and Wilhelm became King.
As King, Wilhelm faced many hard jobs and big decisions.

Wilhelm's life ended in a very busy year for his family.
Wilhelm I was a central figure in 19th-century European history.
Wilhelm was born on March 22, 1797, in Berlin.
His path to power involved several specific stages of leadership. In 1840, his elder brother, Frederick William IV, became King. Because his brother had no children, Wilhelm became the heir presumptive. This meant he was next in line for the throne. In 1858, the King suffered a stroke and became incapacitated. Wilhelm was then named Prince Regent to govern on his brother's behalf. Finally, in 1861, Wilhelm ascended to the Prussian throne after his brother's death.
As King, Wilhelm faced a major political crisis regarding the military. The Landtag, which was the Prussian parliament, refused his budget. He wanted to expand the army from 150,000 to 200,000 men. He also wanted to keep military service at three years. To solve this, Wilhelm appointed Otto von Bismarck as Minister President in 1862. Bismarck was a conservative leader and a loyal friend. This began a powerful partnership that lasted for the rest of Wilhelm's life.
Under this partnership, Prussia won several important wars. Wilhelm oversaw the Second Schleswig War against Denmark in 1864. He also led Prussia through the Austro-Prussian War in 1866. During that war, the Prussian army won a victory at Königgratz. Wilhelm wanted to march on Vienna to take more land. However, Bismarck and the Crown Prince convinced him to stop. Bismarck wanted to keep Austria as a potential future ally.
The final stage of unification came after the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871, the South German states joined the North German Confederation. This reorganization created the German Empire, or the Deutsches Reich. Wilhelm was granted the new title of German Emperor, or Kaiser.
Wilhelm's later years included several attempts on his life. In July 1861, a student attempted to assassinate him. The attack only caused light injuries. These threats allowed Bismarck to pass the Anti-Socialist Laws. Wilhelm lived to see the empire become a dominant force. He remained a respected figure, often called Emperor Wilhelm the Great by his grandson.
The year 1888 was a period of rapid change for the monarchy. This time is known as the Year of the Three Emperors. Wilhelm died on March 9, 1888, at the age of 90. His son, Frederick, succeeded him but died only 99 days later. This led to his grandson, Wilhelm II, becoming the Emperor. Wilhelm's death marked the end of an era for the new German Empire.
