At this time, he was a strong opponent of Confederation. He feared that a central government would lead to "anglification." This meant he worried French Canadians would lose their influence. However, he eventually accepted Confederation and became a moderate liberal leader.

Laurier’s rise to federal leadership was steady and deliberate. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1871. In 1874, he entered federal politics as a Member of Parliament. He gained fame through powerful speeches in the House of Commons. In 1887, he became the leader of the Liberal Party. After losing the 1891 election, he led the Liberals to victory in 1896. He then led the party to three more majority governments in 1900, 1904, and 1908.

The later years of Laurier's career were marked by intense political division. In 1911, his government was defeated over a proposed trade agreement with the United States. Later, World War I created a massive crisis known as the Conscription Crisis of 1917. This was a disagreement over whether to force men to join the military. The Liberal Party split into two groups during this time. Laurier led the anti-conscription faction, known as the Laurier Liberals. Although his group was defeated in the 1917 election, he remained the leader of the opposition. He continued to serve in Parliament until his death in 1919.
