The name Whitehorse comes from the White Horse Rapids. People thought the rapids looked like the mane of a white horse. Today, those rapids are hidden under Schwatka Lake. This lake was made by a dam built in 1958.

The city has a very interesting way of growing. For a long time, people could only reach it by boat, train, or plane. In 1942, the US military built the Alaska Highway. This road was made to move troops and supplies safely.

The project was finished quickly between March and November of that year. This highway changed how everyone travels through the north. Now, the city is a major stop on this long path.

History changed quickly for this area in the late 1800s. In August 1896, gold was found in the Klondike. Three men named Skookum Jim, Tagish Charlie, and George Washington Carmack found it.

This discovery started a huge gold rush. Many people traveled to the area to find wealth. Some people even found copper in the hills to the west. Jack McIntyre and Sam McGee were among the first to claim copper.

Whitehorse has a very specific climate. It is known as the driest city in all of Canada.

Because it sits in a valley, the weather is milder than other northern places. However, it can still get very cold during winter snaps. The days change a lot with the seasons. In the summer, the sun stays up for about 19 hours. In the winter, the days are very short.

Today, many different people call Whitehorse home. About 28,201 people live inside the city boundaries.
