The first type is called Ciconia ciconia. It breeds in Europe and Africa and winters in places like Sub-Saharan Africa. The second type is called Ciconia asiatica. This type is slightly larger and lives in central Asia. In Poland, about 25% of the world's white storks live. These birds are part of a family that includes six different groups of storks.

Storks are very busy parents when they raise their young. They live in pairs and build large nests out of sticks. A female usually lays four eggs in one clutch. Both parents take turns sitting on the eggs to keep them warm. This is called incubation, and it takes about 33 or 34 days. The young birds leave the nest after about 60 days. They breed in areas spanning from Europe north to Finland to northwestern Africa. They also inhabit regions in the Palearctic east, reaching southern Kazakhstan. During the winter, they migrate to Africa, ranging from Sub-Saharan regions down to South Africa. Some populations also winter on the Indian subcontinent. To travel between Europe and Africa, storks use specific land routes. They avoid crossing the Mediterranean Sea directly. This is because they depend on air thermals to soar. It breeds in Turkestan and winters in regions ranging from Iran to India. The stork family itself is divided into three broad groups. These include the open-billed and wood storks, the giant storks, and the "typical" storks. The white stork is a member of the typical stork group, which includes six other species.

History shows that humans have deeply influenced the white stork's population.

During the Middle Ages, the clearing of woodlands for pastures actually helped the species. They benefited from the new open grasslands created for agriculture. However, the 19th and early 20th centuries brought different changes. Industrialization and new farming methods caused the storks to decline and disappear from parts of Europe. Fortunately, modern conservation and reintroduction programs have been successful. These efforts have helped the white stork resume breeding in countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
