Another 120 wells were shut down elsewhere. Since then, the geysers and hot springs have begun to recover. 
Different geysers have their own special patterns. The Prince of Wales Feathers geyser is very close to Pōhutu. Before 1901, people called it the Indicator. This is because it usually erupts just before Pōhutu does. Another geyser, Kereru, erupts every few days or weeks. The Wairoa Geyser is also known for erupting very high. It last erupted naturally in December 1940. Even the Waikite Geyser shows how the land changes. It once erupted after heavy rain, but now it mostly stays quiet. 
Today, many people call this area home. The Tihiotonga-Whakarewarewa area had 873 people in the 2023 census. The community includes many different groups of people. About 45% of the people identify as Māori. There is also a large European population at 54%. Many people speak English, and 15.1% speak Māori. Children in the area go to Whakarewarewa School. This school first opened in 1902 as a native school. It is a place where history and modern life live together.

History shows how human activity can change these natural systems. In the past, residents in Rotorua used shallow wells to extract hot water. They used this geothermal fluid for domestic and commercial heating. These wells were often only 100 meters deep. This extraction caused many thermal features to be adversely affected. For instance, the Kereru Geyser stopped having large eruptions between 1972 and 1988. To fix this, a bore closure programme began in 1987 and 1988. 
Whakarewarewa has been a home for Māori for a very long time. Around 1325, the area was the site of a Māori fortress called Te Puia. This stronghold was known as an impenetrable site. It was never successfully taken in battle. 
The modern community of Tihiotonga-Whakarewarewa is diverse. According to the 2023 New Zealand census, the population was 873 people. This was a 13.2% increase from the 2018 census. The population is 54.0% European and 45.0% Māori. Many different languages are spoken, including English at 94.2% and Māori at 15.1%. The area also includes a school for students in Years 1 to 8. This school, Whakarewarewa School, first opened in 1902 as a native school. It remains a central part of the community today.
