Western philosophy is a huge tradition of thinking. It began with the ancient Greeks. The word itself comes from the Greek words "philosophia." This means "the love of wisdom."

Many people use philosophy to understand the world. It is different from other traditions like Eastern philosophy. It covers many big questions about life. Some thinkers look at how we know things. Others look at how we should act.

Early thinkers wanted to find the first cause of things. They called this the "arche." They used reason instead of just telling stories. Thales of Miletus was the first known philosopher. He lived in Ionia around 625 BC. He believed that everything was made of water.

Some people, called skeptics, doubted we could ever know the truth.

These ideas shaped much of the Western world. Later groups like the Stoics focused on self-discipline. They wanted to fulfill their duties to society. Neoplatonists like Plotinus believed the universe had one single mind. This idea later helped shape Christian thought.
