As time passed, great writers began to build on these traditions. In the 14th century, Dante Alighieri wrote a famous epic. It is called The Divine Comedy. Western literature refers to the vast body of written works produced within the context of Western culture. These works are written in the many diverse languages of Europe. This includes everything from Ancient Greek to modern English and French. Scholars often discuss the "Western canon." This term describes a collection of works considered to be the best or most important. However, the specific list of works in the canon is not fixed. It changes depending on the opinions of critics. They may focus on different defining characteristics of Western culture.

Literary history is shaped by specific time periods and political changes. The 16th century is characterized by Renaissance literature. The 17th century saw the influence of Baroque and Jacobean forms. During the 18th century, many Western countries entered the Enlightenment Era. This era was defined by military and political advancement. These changes directly impacted the prose and poetry of French, Russian, and Spanish writers. Later, the 19th century brought the Romantic era. This period moved away from classicist forms to reflect the political issues of the time.

In the early medieval period, writers worked to preserve classical traditions. As the Western Roman Empire declined, figures like Cassiodorus and Boethius kept the Latin tradition alive. In places like Ravenna, the liberal arts flourished under the protection of Gothic kings. Scholars like Magnus Felix Ennodius and Venantius Fortunatus were noted during this time. Eventually, the establishment of medieval universities helped spread culture. Universities in Bologna, Padua, Naples, and Salerno were very important. These institutions prepared the ground for the development of vernacular literature. Vernacular literature refers to writing in the common, local languages of the people.

One early vernacular tradition in Italy involved the troubadours, or trovatori. These were lyric poets who often sang about courtly love. The tradition began in Occitan and spread from Poitou to Italy by the late 12th century. Italian aristocrats, such as the House of Este, became important patrons. Azzo VI of Este hosted many poets, including Rambertino Buvalelli. Rambertino was one of the earliest Italian troubadours. He served as the podestà of Genoa in 1218. A podestà was a political official. In Genoa, he helped introduce Occitan lyric poetry to the city. This led to a flourishing literary culture in that region.

The 14th century saw the rise of monumental works that bridged the gap to the Renaissance. Dante Alighieri wrote the epic poem The Divine Comedy. In this work, the poet travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. He is guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Dante used allegory to hide deeper meanings under his literal story. For example, the forest represents sin, while Beatrice symbolizes supernatural aid. Dante’s work is notable for its grandeur and delicacy. He combined theology, philosophy, and history into a new Romance form. Following him, Petrarch became the first modern lyric poet. He was also a humanist. Unlike Dante’s transcendental style, Petrarch’s poetry focused on human limits and psychological feelings.

Giovanni Boccaccio also played a massive role in this era. He shared an enthusiastic love for antiquity and Italian literature. Boccaccio was the first to translate the Iliad and the Odyssey into Latin. He was also a pioneer in several other fields. He wrote the first history of women in De mulieribus claris. He also wrote De casibus virorum illustrium, which tells the stories of great unfortunates. In his work Teseide, he was the first to use the octave stanza in a long romantic poem. These writers helped establish the foundations of the humanist movement that would define the 15th century.
