The Western Cape is a province located on the south-western coast of South Africa.
The province was created in 1994 from parts of the former Cape Province. Today, it is the third most populous province in South Africa. In 2022, the population was estimated at 7.43 million inhabitants. Cape Town serves as both the provincial capital and the largest city. About two-thirds of the residents live in the Cape Town metropolitan area. Cape Town is the second-largest city in South Africa. Other major urban centers include George, Stellenbosch, Worcester, and Paarl.
The topography of the Western Cape is exceptionally diverse. Most of the land sits within the Cape Fold Belt. This is a set of nearly parallel sandstone mountain ranges. These mountains formed from rocks aged between 510 and 330 million years old. The actual folding occurred between 350 and 270 million years ago.
Vegetation in the region is also incredibly varied. The province contains almost the entire Cape Floral Kingdom. This is one of only six floral kingdoms in the world. Much of this area is covered by Fynbos. Fynbos refers to evergreen heathlands made of shrubs and flowering plants. Table Mountain alone has as many plant species as the entire United Kingdom. Most Fynbos areas are treeless, except in wet mountain ravines. In these ravines, Afromontane forests can be found. These forests contain tall hardwoods like Yellowwood, Stinkwood, and Ironwood.
The climate is shaped by the varied topography and ocean currents. Two main currents influence the water near the coast. The warm Agulhas Current flows south along the east coast. The cold Benguela Current is an upwelling current from the South Atlantic. Most of the province has a Mediterranean climate. This means winters are cool and wet, while summers are warm and dry. The interior Karoo regions have an arid to semi-arid climate. These areas experience cold, frosty winters and hot summers. The Garden Route and Overberg have a maritime climate. This area has cool, moist winters and mild, moist summers. Mossel Bay has the second mildest climate in the world after Hawaii.
Global weather patterns like ENSO also affect the province. ENSO stands for the El Niño-Southern Oscillation cycle. During the La Niña phase, rainfall often increases in the region. During El Niño, the south-easterly winds that drive upwelling become weaker. This results in warmer coastal waters than normal. El Niño can also lead to less rain in summer rainfall areas. This has caused severe droughts during strong El Niño events. Most precipitation in the province is orographic or frontal in nature. This means it is caused by mountains or weather fronts. Snow is a common occurrence on the mountains during winter.
The Western Cape is known for strong governance and high performance. In the 2024 Governance Performance Index, it achieved the highest scores. The province has the lowest unemployment rate in South Africa. It also has the highest secondary education graduation rate. Cape Town specifically has the highest household incomes in the country. It also has the strongest service delivery and real estate markets.
