Western Australia is a very big state.

It is part of Australia. It sits by the Indian Ocean.

Some parts are hot deserts. Other parts are green and wet.

The south has many plants and animals.

Many people live in the city of Perth. Most people live in the south-west corner.

People find gold in the ground here. They also mine iron ore. This helps the state grow.

Indigenous people have lived here for a long time. It is a special place to see.

The weather changes a lot depending on where you are. The Kimberley area is tropical. The middle of the state has large deserts. These include the Great Sandy Desert and the Gibson Desert. The south-west has a Mediterranean climate. This means it has mild weather.

Most people live in the south-west corner. About 80 percent of people live in Perth. Perth is the capital city.

Mining is a big part of life here. People mine gold and iron ore. The state has the largest iron ore industry in the world. Indigenous people have lived on this land for tens of thousands of years. It is a place with a very long history.

Because the land is so old, it has worn down over time. There are no mountains taller than 1,249 metres. Most of the state is a low, flat plateau. This makes the soil very poor for growing plants. Farmers often have to use fertilizers to help crops grow. This can sometimes change the tiny living things in the soil.

Indigenous peoples have lived in this land for a very long time. They arrived over 50,000 years ago, and maybe even 70,000 years ago. They spread across the whole landmass over many thousands of years. Much later, European explorers began to visit the coast. Dutch explorers arrived in the 17th century. Dirk Hartog led an expedition that landed in 1616.

Later, the British claimed the land in 1827. They started the Swan River Colony in 1829. Captain James Stirling helped establish this new settlement. Perth became the capital city of the colony. The name Western Australia was officially used by 1832.

Many different industries help the state economy grow. Mining is a very important part of life here. Western Australia has the largest iron ore industry in the world. People also mine gold and other minerals.

Gold rushes in the late 1800s brought many new people to the area. In the late 20th century, people also found oil and natural gas offshore. Other people work in farming, especially in the Wheatbelt. Some work in forestry or fishing. In the past, people even hunted whales for oil.

Most people in the state live in one specific area. Over 90 percent of the population lives in the southwest corner. About 80 percent of all people live in Perth.

This means most of the rest of the state is very empty. To travel between the east and west, people use the Eyre Highway. They can also take the Trans-Australian Railway. These paths connect the state to the bigger cities in the east. Western Australia is a land of huge spaces and very deep history.

The land consists of the Yilgarn and Pilbara cratons. These are very old pieces of the Earth's crust. They merged with parts of India and Africa long ago. In the Pilbara, scientists found evidence of early life. These microbes created stromatolites about 3.48 billion years ago.

Because the land is so old, it is very eroded. No part of the state rises above 1,249 metres. This peak is Mount Meharry in the Hamersley Range.

The soil in the state is often very poor. It lacks much phosphorus and nitrogen. This makes it difficult for many plants to grow. Farmers must use fertilizers to help their crops. However, heavy machinery and grazing animals can damage the soil. This can lead to compaction. Large-scale land clearing for farming also affects habitats. In the southwest, this has created a biodiversity hot spot. This area has many rare or endangered species. The Leeuwin Current helps keep the marine life very diverse too.

Indigenous Australians have lived here for a very long time. They arrived between 50,000 and 70,000 years ago. They eventually spread across the entire landmass. They were well-established before Europeans arrived. Dutch explorers visited in the 17th century. Dirk Hartog led the first expedition in 1616.

Later, the British claimed the territory in 1827. They established the Swan River Colony in 1829. Captain James Stirling was a key figure here. Perth was founded as the capital city. The name Western Australia was officially adopted in 1832.

Economic growth has been driven by several major industries. Mining is a primary driver of the economy. Western Australia has the world's largest iron ore industry.

The state also mines gold and other minerals. Gold rushes in the 1890s caused a large population increase. People moved to areas like Kalgoorlie. To support them, a massive water pipeline was built. The Goldfields Water Supply Scheme was finished in 1903. It carries water from Perth to the goldfields. In the late 20th century, offshore petroleum and gas became important too.

Other industries also support the state. Agriculture is important in the Wheatbelt and southern coasts. Pastoralism happens in the grassland areas. Forestry is common in the southwest. Fishing is also a major activity. This includes pearling and historical whaling. Most of the 2.965 million people live in the southwest. About 80 percent of them live in Perth.

The rest of the state is very sparsely populated. The Trans-Australian Railway and Eyre Highway connect the state to the east.
