Between 2013 and 2016, a large sickness spread in West Africa. 


Several things helped the virus spread. Some people had local customs for washing bodies after death. The virus also moved into crowded cities. It was hard to stop at first. Doctors and leaders had to send many resources to help. Eventually, the number of new cases began to go down.
Scientists made a vaccine to help. A vaccine is a medicine that helps keep you from getting sick. This vaccine is called rVSV-ZEBOV. It was approved in 2019. Many survivors still face health problems. Some have what is called post-Ebola syndrome. This means they need medical care for a long time.
Between 2013 and 2016, a huge sickness spread through West Africa. 

The sickness spread through several steps. It likely started with a young boy named Emile Ouamouno. He lived in the village of Méliandou in Guinea. He died in December 2013. His family members then became sick and died too. People who caught it from them spread it to other villages. 
Many groups worked to stop the spread. The World Health Organization (WHO) helped many countries. 
There are many important numbers from this time. About 28,616 people were infected by the virus. Out of those, 11,310 people died. This means the case-fatality rate was about 40%.

The 2013–2016 Ebola virus disease epidemic was a massive medical crisis. 

The epidemic likely began with a single index case. Scientists believe this was a young boy named Emile Ouamouno. He died in the village of Méliandou, Guinea, in December 2013. His mother, sister, and grandmother also became ill and died. This allowed the virus to spread from one family to other villages. The spread was made worse by several complex factors. Extreme poverty and dysfunctional healthcare systems made it hard to manage. Additionally, local burial customs involving washing the body helped the virus move. The virus also reached densely populated cities, which accelerated its spread. 
The disease moved through different countries at different speeds. In Guinea, the outbreak was first reported in four southeastern districts in March 2014. By late May, it had reached the capital city, Conakry. In Liberia, cases appeared in four counties by mid-April 2014. The virus then reached the capital, Monrovia, in mid-June. Sierra Leone saw a very rapid progression of the disease. By 17 July 2014, Sierra Leone had 442 suspected cases. This number was higher than the cases in Guinea or Liberia at that time. 
International organizations stepped in to manage the crisis. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 8 August 2014. 
The scale of the epidemic is visible in the numbers. By the end of the outbreak, 28,616 people had been infected. Of these, 11,310 people died. This resulted in a case-fatality rate of approximately 40%. The WHO reported slightly different figures, noting 28,646 suspected cases and 11,323 deaths. These figures represent a 39.5% fatality rate. However, the WHO believes these numbers may actually understate the true magnitude. The epidemic was finally declared over on 9 June 2016. This was 42 days after the last case tested negative in Monrovia. 
Surviving the virus does not mean all problems are over. About 17,000 people survived the epidemic. Many of these survivors suffer from post-Ebola syndrome. This condition can be severe enough to require medical care for years. There is also a concern that the virus can "hide" in a survivor's body. It can remain active for months or even years. It can then become active again in the same person or a sexual partner.
Science has provided new ways to prevent future outbreaks. In December 2016, the WHO announced results from a vaccine trial. The vaccine is called rVSV-ZEBOV. It appeared to offer protection against the specific variant of EBOV in West Africa. It is currently the only prophylactic that offers such protection. Because of its effectiveness, 300,000 doses have been stockpiled. The rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine received official regulatory approval in 2019. This tool is a vital part of preventing future epidemics.
