West Frisian is a special language. Most people speak it in Friesland. This is a province in the north of the Netherlands.

West Frisian is a close relative of English. Some people say English and Frisian are like milk and cheese. They are very similar but not the same.

In the past, people wrote in Frisian. Later, it was mostly a spoken language. Today, it has an official status. This means it is equal to Dutch in Friesland. People use it in schools and in courts.

In schools, children can learn in Frisian. You can even see it on bus ticket machines. Some towns have changed their names to Frisian names too. Even though it is used often, UNESCO calls it a vulnerable language. This means it might be in danger of disappearing. People work hard to keep the language alive. It is a big part of their history and pride.
