Geographically, the region is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. To the north and east, it meets the dry Sahara Desert. This placement makes the region a vital link between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.

The climate of West Africa is shaped by two very different environmental forces. The Sahara Desert to the north produces the Harmattan, which are dry winds. In contrast, the Atlantic Ocean brings seasonal monsoons to the southern areas.

This combination of dry and wet weather creates many different biomes. These include tropical forests and various types of drylands. Such diverse environments support a wide range of biodiversity. You can find animals like the pangolin, the rhinoceros, and the African bush elephant in these habitats.

The history of the region is divided into five major periods. It began with prehistory, when the first human settlers arrived and developed agriculture. This was followed by the Iron Age, when empires consolidated trade. The third period saw major polities flourish through contact with non-Africans. The fourth period was the colonial era, dominated by Great Britain and France. Finally, the post-independence era saw the formation of the current modern nations.

During prehistory, West African populations were very mobile. Archaic humans using Acheulean tools lived here between 780,000 and 126,000 years ago. Later, Middle Stone Age peoples were gradually replaced by Late Stone Age migrants. As humid conditions increased, the West African forest expanded. In the Holocene, Niger-Congo speakers created the earliest pottery in Africa at Ounjougou, Mali.

These people also domesticated important crops. They grew yams in the Niger River basin and rice in the Inner Niger Delta. They also farmed pearl millet and cowpeas.

As economies grew, powerful centralized states and empires began to emerge. The Ghana Empire flourished between the 2nd and 12th centuries C.E. This was followed by the Mali Empire, which controlled much of the region. The Mali Empire reached great heights under the ruler Musa I.

These empires were wealthy because they controlled regional trade routes. They supplied highly valued goods like gold, ivory, and advanced iron-working products.

Many unique political systems also developed in the region. The Oyo Empire became a massive state through its powerful cavalry and trade wealth. In the south, the Benin Empire was a highly developed state known for its beautiful bronze casting.

The Kingdom of Nri in present-day Nigeria was quite unusual. Its leader, the Eze Nri, exercised religious and political influence without using military power. The Efik Kingdom also held prominence, with Calabar serving as an early capital for Nigeria. These diverse states show the complex political history of West Africa.

The relationship between West Africa and the rest of the world changed significantly during the colonial period. European traders, including the Portuguese, established settlements along the coast starting in 1445. This era included the Atlantic slave trade, which expanded existing systems of slavery. Later, colonial powers like Britain and France exploited the region for resources. They focused on exporting extractive goods such as cocoa, coffee, and tropical timber.

Today, West Africa is one of the fastest-growing regions in Africa. As of 2017, the population was approximately 382 million people. This population is growing both demographically and economically.

However, the region faces serious environmental challenges. Deforestation and biodiversity loss are major concerns. Pollution from mining and plastics also affects the land. Additionally, climate change and overfishing threaten the delicate ecological balance of the region.
