In May 1961, Clark began work on this design. He collaborated with Charles Molnar to create it. The LINC was the first minicomputer. It was a 12-bit computer with a one-half megahertz processor. The machine consisted of four metal modules. Together, these modules were about the size of two television sets placed side by side. Each LINC included its own tiny screen and keyboard. This setup allowed for much more direct interaction than previous systems. In 1962, the machine was used at the National Institute of Mental Health to analyze neural responses in a cat.

Clark continued to innovate through different computer architectures. He was the architect for the TX-0 and TX-2 machines at Lincoln Labs. The TX-2 was particularly important for the future of graphics. It integrated man-machine interfaces that allowed for "on-line" use. An MIT student named Ivan Sutherland used the TX-2's cathode ray tube and light pen to create Sketchpad. This invention helped start the field of interactive computer graphics. In 1964, Clark moved to Washington University in St. Louis. There, he and Molnar worked on macromodules. These were basic building blocks for asynchronous computing. They were designed so users could extend computers without needing electrical engineering knowledge.

Clark also made vital contributions to networking. In April 1967, he provided a key insight for the planning of the ARPANET. The ARPANET was the predecessor to the modern Internet. Clark suggested using separate, small computers to act as Interface Message Processors. These would form a message switching network. This method helped reduce the load on local computers. His idea helped shape how digital information moves across networks today. Later, in 1972, he traveled to China for three weeks. He joined five other scientists to discuss computer technology in Shanghai and Beijing. This trip helped open technical dialogue between the two nations.

Throughout his life, Clark received many prestigious honors. In 1981, he earned the Eckert–Mauchly Award for his work on computer architecture. That same year, he was recognized as a Computer Pioneer for the "First Personal Computer." In 1984, Washington University awarded him an honorary degree. He was also elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1999. These awards reflect his massive impact on the digital age. Even when he faced challenges, such as being fired from MIT for insubordination, he stayed true to his ideas. He fought to make technology more interactive and less restricted by authority.

Only fifty Lincs of the original design were ever built. However, they paved the way for companies like Digital Equipment to create minicomputers.
