His life began with many changes. He was born in 1271 to King Ottokar II and Queen Kunigunda. His father died in a battle in 1278. Wenceslaus was only six years old at that time. Because he was so young, he could not rule alone. For a few years, his mother and her partner, Záviš of Falkenstein, helped lead. In 1290, Wenceslaus took full control by ordering the death of his stepfather.

One of the biggest moments for his kingdom happened in 1298. People found silver in a place called Kuttenberg, or Kutná Hora. This was one of the richest silver finds in Europe. Wenceslaus made the silver mines a royal monopoly. This meant the king controlled the silver. He also created new coins called Prague groschen. These coins became very popular across Europe for many years.

Some rulers, like Matthew III Csák, even switched sides to support a rival. Wenceslaus had to send an army to help his son in the city of Buda. He eventually took the Hungarian crown back to Bohemia in 1304.

Wenceslaus II was a powerful king from the Přemyslid dynasty. He ruled during the late 13th and early 14th centuries. His reign is famous because he expanded his lands into a massive empire. At its height, his territory stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Danube river.

He held three major royal titles. He was the King of Bohemia, the Duke of Cracow, and the King of Poland. His ability to manage wealth and politics made him one of the most important Czech kings in history.

Wenceslaus was born in 1271 to King Ottokar II and Queen Kunigunda. His childhood was marked by sudden political shifts. In 1276, the King of the Romans, Rudolf I, placed Ottokar under an imperial ban. This forced Ottokar to give up claims to Austria and nearby duchies. Shortly after, in August 1278, Ottokar II died at the Battle on the Marchfeld. Wenceslaus was only six years old when his father died. Because he was too young to rule, a regent named Otto V managed the government.

By the age of twelve, Wenceslaus returned to Bohemia to rule officially. However, he was not truly independent at first. His mother, Kunigunda, and her partner, Záviš of Falkenstein, held great influence over him. Kunigunda and Záviš eventually married after gaining the young king's consent. Wenceslaus did not rule alone until 1290. In that year, he ordered the beheading of Záviš for alleged treason. This act allowed him to finally begin ruling his kingdom without a stepfather's control.

A major turning point for the kingdom's wealth occurred in 1298. Silver was discovered at a location called Kuttenberg, now known as Kutná Hora. This was one of the richest silver strikes in all of Europe. Between 1300 and 1340, these mines may have produced 20 tons of silver every year. Wenceslaus turned silver production into a royal monopoly. He also created a new currency called the Prague groschen. These coins became a very popular type of money throughout Europe for many centuries.

To manage this new wealth, Wenceslaus introduced the Ius regale montanorum in 1300. This was a royal mining code. It was a legal document that set the rules for mining operations. It defined the technical terms and administrative conditions needed to run the mines. This legal structure helped organize the massive silver production in Central Bohemia. It ensured the crown could effectively manage the resources that made the kingdom so powerful.

Wenceslaus also spent much of his reign expanding his political reach into Poland and Hungary. In 1291, the High Duke of Poland, Przemysł II, gave the Duchy of Kraków to Wenceslaus. After Przemysł died in 1296, Wenceslaus became the overlord of Poland. He was eventually crowned King of Poland in 1300. In 1301, he also claimed the throne of Hungary for his young son. This was difficult because Hungary was split into several principalities. Powerful rulers like Matthew III Csák eventually switched sides to support a rival named Charles Robert of Anjou.

The struggle in Hungary became quite dangerous for the royal family. In 1303, the political situation in the city of Buda became unstable. Wenceslaus's son became afraid and wrote to his father in Prague for help. Wenceslaus responded by leading a large army into Buda. However, after evaluating the situation, he decided to take his son and the Hungarian crown back to Bohemia in 1304. He left Ivan Kőszegi to represent his interests in the region.

Wenceslaus II left a lasting legacy through urban growth and cultural planning. He helped establish the city of Plzeň in 1295. He also planned to build the first university in Central Europe. His reign brought great respect to Bohemia, but it also caused hostility from other European royal families. Wenceslaus died on June 21, 1305, at the age of 33. He likely died from tuberculosis. He was succeeded by his son, Wenceslaus III. Sadly, the massive empire Wenceslaus built began to crumble shortly after his death.
