History shows that the canal has faced both progress and accidents. In 1912, a steamer called the La Canadienne lost control and hit a lock. This caused a surge of water that tragically resulted in the deaths of three boys. In 1974, the ore-carrier Steelton struck Bridge 12, knocking it over. While no one was killed in that event, the bridge was destroyed. The canal continues to evolve, such as with the Welland By-Pass built between 1967 and 1972. This bypass provides a shorter alignment that avoids downtown Welland. The canal remains a central part of the Great Lakes shipping system.
