The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are located in the United States. Goat Island and Luna Island sit in the river to separate the falls.

The falls work through a natural process of erosion. Long ago, massive glaciers melted and filled large basins. This created the Great Lakes we see today. As the water flowed, it carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment.

The river flows over a hard layer of rock called caprock. This hard layer sits on top of softer shale. The water wears away the soft shale underneath. Eventually, the heavy caprock breaks off in large chunks. This process makes the falls move slowly southward over time.

Many people have studied the history and name of this place. Some say the name comes from the word Ongiara, meaning thundering water.

Other scholars believe it comes from the name of a local native group. The Niagagarega people lived in this area a long time ago. The name might also mean a "neck" of land between lakes. Even the modern Seneca name has a special meaning. It means "the cliffs are standing."

There are many amazing facts about the water and the land. Horseshoe Falls is about 167 feet high.

It sits on the international border between Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA. The falls are part of the Niagara River system. This river drains Lake Erie into Lake Ontario. The falls are famous for their immense power and natural beauty. They also serve as a major source of hydroelectric power. This power comes from the massive volume of moving water.

The falls consist of three distinct parts. The largest is the Horseshoe Falls, also known as the Canadian Falls.

It straddles the border between the two nations. The other two falls are located entirely within the United States. These are the American Falls and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls.

Two islands separate these falls. Goat Island sits between the Horseshoe and American Falls. Luna Island separates the American Falls from the Bridal Veil Falls.

A specific geological process created these waterfalls. About 10,000 years ago, the Wisconsin glaciation ended. As these massive glaciers receded, they left behind huge amounts of meltwater. This water filled basins to create the Great Lakes. The water then flowed over the Niagara Escarpment.

The river carved a gorge through this landscape. This happened because the riverbed is made of different rock layers. The top layer is a hard caprock of limestone and dolomite. This layer is part of the Lockport Formation. Below this lies the much softer Rochester Formation, which is made of shale. The river erodes the soft shale first. This undercuts the hard caprock until it breaks off in large chunks. This cycle of erosion causes the falls to retreat southward.

There are many theories regarding the name "Niagara." Some believe it comes from the Native American word Ongiara, meaning "thundering water."

Iroquoian scholar Bruce Trigger suggests it comes from the Niagagarega people. These were a branch of the Neutral Confederacy. Other theories suggest the name means a "neck" or a "point of land cut in two." The Mohawk word "onyara" refers to the neck of land between the lakes. The modern Seneca name is Jo'sgöhsodö''', which means "the cliffs are standing." The word "Onguiaahra" appeared on maps as early as 1641.

The scale of the falls is truly impressive. Horseshoe Falls is approximately 167 feet high.

It is also about 2,600 feet wide. The American Falls is 188 feet high and 3,160 feet wide. The flow rate is also enormous. During peak daytime hours, massive amounts of water pass over the crest every minute. The average annual flow rate is very high. The water has a distinct verdant green color. This color comes from 60 tonnes of dissolved salts and rock flour every minute. Rock flour is very finely ground rock created by erosion.

Human activity has deeply influenced the falls. In the 19th century, industrialization threatened the area. People wanted to use the land for commerce and factories. This led to a conservation movement called "Free Niagara." Leaders like Frederick Law Olmsted worked to protect the landscape. They wanted to provide public access without destroying the beauty. Their efforts led to the creation of state parks in both New York and Ontario. Today, the International Niagara Board of Control manages water diversion. They use the International Control Dam to regulate flow. This helps balance hydroelectric needs with tourism.

The falls remain a dynamic and changing environment. Engineering has slowed the natural rate of erosion. Historically, the falls retreated much faster than they do now. Currently, the erosion rate is about 1 foot per year. Scientists estimate the falls will reach Lake Erie in about 50,000 years.

Even with these changes, the area remains a vital habitat. The river is an important area for many birds. About 100,000 seagulls winter in the region. They stay because the river is unlikely to freeze over. This makes it a great place for them to find food.
