His social status changed dramatically through his connection to the imperial family. His sister, Wei Zifu, became a favorite of Emperor Wu. This connection led to Wei Qing serving as a horseman in the Jianzhang Camp, which was the Emperor's royal guard. He survived a dangerous attempt on his life by the powerful Grand Princess Guantao. After being rescued by his fellow guards, Emperor Wu appointed him to several high-ranking roles. These positions included Chief of Jianzhang Camp, Chief of Staff, and Chief Councillor. This tactical move broke the Xiongnu lines and caused a massive retreat.
The Mobei Campaign resulted in approximately 19,000 enemy deaths. It forced the Xiongnu to retreat further and weakened their economic power. Wei Qing's use of heavy-armored chariots in ring formations was highly effective. Later Chinese tacticians studied these defensive and offensive maneuvers for their brilliance.
