When Wei was young, he saw many people suffer. He learned about famines in rural China. These were times when there was not enough food. This made him question the government. Later, he worked as an electrician at a zoo.

In 1978, Wei joined a movement. People used a big wall to share ideas. This was called the Democracy Wall. Wei wrote a paper called "The Fifth Modernization." He said China needed democracy. This means people should help run the country. He also said the leader was a dictator.

Because of his words, the government arrested him. Wei spent 18 years in prison. He was in jail for a long time. He even wrote letters from prison. He shared his ideas in a book.

In 1997, Wei moved to the United States. He started the Wei Jingsheng Foundation. This group works to help human rights in China.
