Wayang is a traditional form of Indonesian puppet theatre that carries deep cultural meaning. The term refers to both the individual puppets and the entire theatrical performance. In the Javanese language, the word means "shadow" or "imagination."

These performances are vital to the social and religious lives of people in Java and Bali. They are not merely for entertainment but serve many essential roles in society. Wayang is used in Balinese temple rituals for prayer or to cleanse children from bad luck. It is also used for thanksgiving ceremonies to celebrate abundant crops.

In Javanese culture, shows celebrate weddings and circumcision ceremonies. They are also staged for Independence Day, company anniversaries, and even as cultural tourism attractions.

The most famous type is wayang kulit, which translates to "skin" wayang. This refers to the leather construction of the puppets.

To create these figures, craftsmen work in groups for several weeks. They begin by tracing master models from paper onto buffalo hide. Artists use fine tools to chisel intricate details into the skin. They then smooth the surface, often using a glass bottle, and apply a primer. Another craftsman paints the figures using beautiful hues and gold.

Finally, the movable parts, such as the arms, are mounted onto the body. These parts are controlled by buffalo horn handles and bamboo sticks. A crew of up to ten people can complete ten puppets in a single week.

A single master artist, known as a dalang, directs the entire production. The dalang acts as both a storyteller and a spiritual leader. They manipulate the puppets and provide various character voices.

The performance is accompanied by live music. In Java, a gamelan orchestra provides the soundtrack. In Bali, performers use a specific ensemble called gender wayang. Traditionally, a Javanese oil lamp called a blencong provided the light. This lamp was often shaped like the mythical Garuda bird.

Today, many Javanese shows use halogen electric lights, while Bali often maintains the use of firelight.

The stories told during wayang are often epic and complex. Many plays are based on the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Other performances use local cultural legends, such as the Panji tales.

A unique feature of Javanese wayang is the punokawan, or "clown-servants." These characters are not part of the original Hindu epics but were added later. They accompany the story's heroes and provide humorous or philosophical interludes. They often act like a political cabaret, discussing contemporary affairs and gossip. One important character is Semar, who is actually a god of love living on earth. He is joined by his three sons: Gareng, Petruk, and Bagong.

Scholars have long debated the exact origins of wayang. Some suggest shadow play originated in Central Asia, China, or India. For example, Indian tholu bommalata uses colored leather puppets behind a screen. However, many theater scholars argue that wayang is an indigenous Javanese creation. They point out that the technical terms used in wayang are Javanese, not Sanskrit. Furthermore, the puppets and storytelling styles are uniquely sophisticated.

Some researchers believe the art form grew from ancient shamanism and the worship of ancestors. This connection to the spirit world is a key part of its traditional development.

Historical records prove that wayang has been a staple of Indonesian life for centuries. The oldest known record dates to 903 CE in the Dalinan charter. This document mentions a performer named Galigi who held a puppet show for the gods. He told the story of the hero Bima Kumara from the Mahabharata. Another record from the mid-10th century, the Kuţi inscription, mentions three types of performers. By 1035 CE, the poet Mpu Kanwa wrote about the shadow screen in his poem, Arjunawiwaha. This poem compared life to a performance where a higher power is just a screen away. These ancient texts show that the complex traditions of wayang were already well-established.

Wayang exists in several different styles and forms across the islands. In Central Java, the cities of Surakarta and Yogyakarta host the most famous traditions. These styles are often imitated by other regions. Other regional styles can be found in West Java, East Java, and Cirebon. In Bali, the wayang kulit figures are more compact and naturalistic. In Lombok, some puppets represent real people.

There is also wayang golek, which consists of 3D wooden puppets. While traditional designs have changed little in 300 years, modern innovations exist. Some contemporary forms use theatrical spotlights, colored lights, and new music to evolve the art.
