In 1972, a group of men broke into a building. This building was part of the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C.

They wanted to spy on the Democratic National Committee. These men worked for Nixon's re-election campaign.

After the break-in, Nixon tried to hide his part in it. He tried to stop investigators from finding the truth. This was called a cover-up. Reporters like Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein helped find facts. They worked to show what really happened.

Nixon had secret tapes of his talks in the Oval Office.

A special prosecutor named Archibald Cox asked for these tapes. Nixon refused to give them up. This caused a big crisis in the government. Later, a tape showed Nixon tried to stop an FBI study. This was called the "Smoking Gun" tape. Because of these things, Nixon resigned in August 1974. He was the first U.S. president to leave his job this way.
