Metro helps people move around.
Metro helps people travel.

Many groups work together to run Metro. They help plan the paths for trains. They also help build new stops. One new stop is Potomac Yard.
Metro has its own police. They keep people safe. The trains and buses need money to run. The local lands provide this money.
Building the trains took a long time. The first part of the train system opened in 1976. It used the Red Line. Many more stops were added later.
Metro is a big part of life. It helps many people every day. It is a great way to move around.
Metro helps people move around the Washington area. It is run by a group called WMATA. This group works with D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. They also work with the federal government.
WMATA runs three main types of travel. They have Metrorail, which are fast trains. They have Metrobus, which are buses on the road. They also have MetroAccess for special needs.
Building the system took many years. The first part of the rail system opened in 1976. It used the Red Line. The full system of 83 stations was done by 2001. Sometimes, they add new stops in the middle of lines. We call these infill stations.
WMATA has its own police force. They keep the stations and buses safe. The group does not collect its own taxes. It needs money from the local areas to work. This money pays for new parts and big projects.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, or WMATA, helps people travel around a large part of the United States. Most people just call it Metro. It is a special agency that works across three different areas. These areas are Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.
How the system works involves many moving parts and careful planning. WMATA does not collect its own taxes to pay for things. Instead, it relies on the member areas for money. These areas provide funding for big projects and daily work.
Long ago, the area used private buses and streetcars. Many of these were owned by the Capital Transit Company. In 1955, experts began studying how to build a better system. They wanted to make sure people could travel easily by the year 1980. A big report in 1959 suggested building two subway lines.
Building the Metro took a very long time. Workers broke ground for the train system in 1969. The first part of Metrorail opened on March 27, 1976. This first section used the Red Line to connect two stations.
Managing such a huge system is a big job. A board of directors makes important decisions for WMATA. This board has two voting members from each of the three areas. The U.S. federal government also has two voting members. They also have two alternate members from each area. To keep everyone safe, WMATA has its own police force. This is called the Metro Transit Police Department. They work to keep the trains and buses running smoothly for everyone.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, often called WMATA, is a vital public agency. It manages transportation across three different jurisdictions. These areas include Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. WMATA provides several distinct ways for people to travel. It operates a rapid transit rail system known as Metrorail. It also runs a fixed-route bus service called Metrobus. Additionally, it offers MetroAccess, which is a paratransit service for specific needs.
WMATA functions through a complex organizational structure. It does not have its own independent taxation authority. Instead, it depends on its member jurisdictions for funding. These jurisdictions provide money for daily operations and capital investments. The agency is governed by a board of directors. This board includes two voting representatives from each jurisdiction. These include the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The U.S. federal government also appoints two voting members.
To ensure safety, WMATA maintains its own specialized police force. This group is known as the Metro Transit Police Department. The agency also handles large-scale regional transportation planning. This includes the execution of major transit infrastructure projects. Some recent examples involve extending rail lines to major hubs. One project is an extension of Metrorail to Dulles International Airport. Another project involves building an infill station at Potomac Yard. An infill station is a new stop added between existing stations.
Before WMATA existed, the region relied on private companies. In the mid-19th century, private bus lines and streetcars served the area. Many of these were eventually absorbed into the Capital Transit Company. This company was formed on December 1, 1933. In 1955, the National Capital Planning Commission began an engineering study. They wanted to plan for the needs of the year 1980. This study suggested building two rapid transit subway lines. President John F. Kennedy supported these early rail plans.
Congress played a major role in creating the current system. In 1960, the National Capital Transportation Act created the NCTA. This agency was meant to coordinate regional planning. Later, the Urban Mass Transportation Act of 1964 promised federal funding. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the National Capital Transportation Act of 1965. This act approved the construction of a rapid transit system. WMATA was officially founded on February 20, 1967. It was created through an interstate compact. This is a special legal agreement between different states. Congress must approve these compacts under the U.S. Constitution.
Construction of the Metrorail system began in 1969. The first portion of the system opened on March 27, 1976. This initial section connected Farragut North to Rhode Island Avenue. It operated on the Red Line. The original 83-station system was not finished until much later. The final segment opened on January 13, 2001. This segment connected Anacostia to Branch Avenue on the Green Line.
Managing the finances of such a large system is difficult. During the Great Recession, WMATA faced significant financial pressure. In 2002, the agency entered into lease agreements for rail cars. These deals involved selling cars to banks and leasing them back. When a major insurer collapsed, WMATA had to seek legal help. In 2009, the agency issued new municipal bonds. By June 30, 2010, total outstanding bonds reached $390.9 million. This included $55 million in Build America Bonds. These bonds were part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Most system debt is still financed by local jurisdictions.
The agency has seen many different leaders over the years. General manager Paul J. Wiedefeld focused on transit safety. He worked to overhaul the infrastructure to improve reliability. After him, Randy Clarke became the general manager and CEO. Clarke has worked to improve reliability and ridership. In 2024, a poll showed the highest approval ratings in a decade. His contract was extended in April 2025 to last until 2029. This leadership helps manage the complex connections between rail, bus, and the community.
