It rains quite often here. Rain falls on at least 260 days every year. The average temperature is about 27 degrees Celsius. Only a small part of the land is used for farming. Most of the land is covered by plants or mountains.

People have lived on these islands for a very long time. The earliest signs of humans come from the Lapita culture. These people lived there between 850 and 800 BCE. The islands were good places for boats to stop. Later, the islands saw many changes. In the 15th and 16th centuries, there were Tongan invasions. These groups stayed and changed the local culture.

European explorers found the islands later. Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire saw Futuna in 1616. They named the islands after their home town, Hoorn.

French influence grew in the 1800s. Missionaries arrived in 1837 and brought the Catholic faith. This is why most people there are Catholic today.

In 1887 and 1888, local leaders signed treaties with France. This made the islands a French protectorate. During World War II, the islands saw big changes. The United States military landed on Wallis in May 1942.

They built bases and many new buildings. This brought new ways of living to the islands. After the war, many people moved to places like New Caledonia.

Today, the islands are governed by both French and local rules. There are three traditional kingdoms: Uvea, Sigave, and Alo.

It consists of several islands located between Tuvalu and Samoa. To the northwest lies Tuvalu, while Fiji is to the southwest. Tonga is located to the southeast, and Tokelau sits to the northeast. The territory is made up of three main volcanic tropical islands and many small islets. The largest and most populated island is Uvea, also called Wallis. The second group is the Hoorn Islands, which include Futuna and the mostly uninhabited Alofi. Mata Utu serves as the capital and largest city.

The geography of the islands is shaped by volcanic activity and tropical weather. The highest point is Mont Puke on Futuna, which reaches 556 meters. The climate follows two distinct seasonal patterns. From November to April, the islands experience a hot and rainy season. This period often brings tropical cyclones that cause heavy storms. From May to October, the islands enter a cool, dry season. This is driven by the southeast trade winds.

Rainfall is very frequent, occurring on at least 260 days per year. The average annual temperature stays around 27 degrees Celsius. Because the islands are so wet, the average humidity is 80%.

Human history on the islands began with the Lapita culture. Archaeological evidence shows people lived here between 850 and 800 BCE. These early inhabitants used the islands as stopover points for boat travel. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Tongan invasions changed the islands. Futuna kept more of its original culture, but Wallis saw major changes in language and society.

Some original inhabitants built forts that still exist as ruins today. Oral histories even preserve very old connections between Samoa and Futuna.

European contact began in the early 17th century. In 1616, Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire mapped Futuna. They named the islands "Hoornse Eylanden" after their Dutch home, Hoorn. Much later, in 1767, the British explorer Samuel Wallis sailed past the Wallis Islands.

French influence grew significantly after 1837. This was when French missionaries arrived to spread Roman Catholicism. Pierre Chanel became a major patron saint for the region. By 1887 and 1888, local kings signed treaties to make the islands a French protectorate.

World War II brought intense changes to the islands. In May 1942, the United States military landed on Wallis.

The U.S. Army built bases and new infrastructure there. This contact with Western lifestyles changed local customs and authority. Futuna was not occupied by the Americans during this time. After the war, Wallis faced an economic crisis. This led many people to migrate to New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

Today, the territory has a unique system of governance. It is divided into three traditional kingdoms: Uvea, Sigave, and Alo.

These kingdoms still hold customary authority over their people. The French government provides a high administrator and a president. The people elect a 20-member Territorial Assembly to help govern. While French law handles criminal justice, the kingdoms use customary law for civil disputes.

The population of the territory has been changing over time. In 2003, the population was 14,944 people. By the July 2023 census, that number had dropped to 11,151. This represents a significant decline in residents. The land is also facing environmental challenges. Only 5% of the land is suitable for farming. Deforestation is a serious problem because wood is the main fuel source. This causes the mountains on Futuna to suffer from erosion.
