He grew up in a very busy royal court. Many teachers helped him learn about the world. He studied at the Kraków Academy and also spent two years in Rome. He could speak and write in Latin, Italian, and German. This helped him talk to many different people.

As a young prince, Władysław traveled through many parts of Europe. He used a fake name, Snopkowski, to stay safe on his long trip.

His father was Sigismund III Vasa, the King of Poland. His mother was Anna of Austria, from the prestigious Habsburg family. Władysław lost his mother when he was very young. He was raised by Urszula Meierin, who held great influence at the royal court. As he grew, he studied under many different mentors. These included priests like Marek Łętkowski and military experts like Zygmunt Kazanowski. He studied at the Kraków Academy and spent two years in Rome. He became fluent in German, Italian, and Latin.

Before becoming king, Władysław experienced many political challenges. In 1610, the Polish army captured Moscow. Because of this, the Seven Boyars, who were Russia's aristocracy council, elected him as tsar.

However, he never actually took the Russian throne. His father, Sigismund III, wanted to convert the Russian people to Roman Catholicism. This created a conflict with the Eastern Orthodox religion. Sigismund preferred to act as a regent instead of letting Władysław rule. Władysław even tried to lead a campaign to regain the throne in 1616. He held the title of Grand Duke of Moscow until 1634, but he had no real power there.

Traveling through Europe helped prepare Władysław for his future role. In 1624, he traveled under the fake name Snopkowski to stay safe.

This election happened after the death of his father. To accept the position, he had to sign the pacta conventa. This was a list of serious promises to the nobility. He pledged to fund a military school and equipment. He also promised to find ways to fund a navy. He agreed not to declare war or make peace treaties without the Sejm, which was the parliament. He even promised to move money from the Royal Mint to the Royal Treasury.

His military leadership was tested almost immediately. In 1632, Russia invaded the Commonwealth.

This conflict is known as the Smolensk War. Władysław personally participated in the fighting. He used modern infantry and advanced artillery to defend the land. He was a skillful tactician who used Western ideas for fortifications. In 1633, he broke the siege of Smolensk. By 1634, the Russian army under Mikhail Shein was forced to surrender. These victories helped secure his reputation as a strong leader.

Władysław IV died on 20 May 1648. He did not leave behind a legitimate son. Because of this, his half-brother, John II Casimir Vasa, became the next king. His death marked the end of a stable period for the Commonwealth. Soon after, major conflicts like the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the Swedish invasion began. These events weakened the country and changed its status in Europe. Historians often look back at Władysław's reign as a time of strength and cultural growth.
