He even spent time as a hostage in Bakhchysarai. This helped him learn the Turkish language and military ways. He became a very skilled commander through these hard experiences.

Different groups in the government often disagreed with each other. Some people even called Sobieski an enemy of the state. However, he won many battles that helped his reputation. In 1673, he won a big victory at the Battle of Khotyn.

This victory happened right before the old king died. Because of this, the people elected Sobieski as their monarch in 1674. He was finally crowned as King John III in 1676. He ruled for 22 years until his death.

As king, Sobieski had many big jobs to do.

The country had been through many wars and had very little money. He wanted to make the country strong and stable again. One way he did this was by changing the army. He organized soldiers into new regiments. He also changed the tools they used in battle. He replaced long pikes with battle-axes for the infantry.

He also added more cannons to the army. These changes helped the military work much better.

His most famous moment happened at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.

In his later years, Sobieski struggled with his health. He died on 17 June 1696. He was buried in the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków.

Sobieski fought in many different conflicts. He fought in the Russo-Polish War and the Swedish invasion known as "The Deluge." During the Swedish invasion, he briefly swore allegiance to King Charles X Gustav. However, he soon returned to the side of the Polish king, John II Casimir Vasa.

Sobieski became an expert in Ottoman military tactics. He spent time as a hostage in the Crimean Tatar capital, Bakhchysarai. While there, he learned the Turkish and Tatar languages. This experience made him a very effective commander against the Ottoman Empire. He held many high offices, such as the Field Crown Hetman. Eventually, he reached the rank of Grand Hetman of the Crown. This was the highest military rank in the Commonwealth.

Politics within the Commonwealth were often unstable. Different groups in the government often fought for power. In 1672, the pro-French group and the pro-court group formed rival confederations. This division led to the Treaty of Buchach, which was a difficult moment for the country. However, Sobieski used his military success to gain political strength. In 1673, he won a major victory at the Battle of Khotyn.

This victory helped him become a leading figure. Following the death of King Michał, Sobieski was elected monarch in 1674. He was officially crowned on 2 February 1676.

As king, Sobieski worked to stabilize a country devastated by war. The national treasury was nearly empty. He focused on reforming the military to make it stronger. He organized the army into specific regiments. He also changed the equipment used by soldiers. For example, the infantry stopped using pikes and began using battle-axes.

He also increased the number of cannons and introduced new artillery tactics. These changes helped the Commonwealth defend its borders more effectively.

His most famous achievement occurred at the Battle of Vienna in 1683.
