There are many ways to measure a vowel. One way is height, which is the vertical position of the tongue. High vowels like "i" have the tongue close to the roof of the mouth. Low vowels like "a" have the jaw open and the tongue down low.

Another way is backness, which is the horizontal position. Front vowels have the tongue forward in the mouth. Back vowels have the tongue toward the back. Some languages use many levels of height. The Kensiu language in Malaysia and Thailand is very unusual. It uses many different levels of height to tell vowels apart. Most languages use height as the main way to make different vowels.

Lips also play a big part in how we speak. This is called roundedness. Some vowels use rounded lips to change the sound. In some sounds, the lips push out. This is called endolabial rounding. In other sounds, the lips pull in or compress. This is called exolabial rounding. For example, the Japanese sound "u" is exolabial. It sounds different from the English "u" sound. Some languages like Swedish and Norwegian use both types of rounding to make different sounds. By moving our tongues and lips, we can make a huge variety of sounds.

It is also frictionless and continuant, so no air pressure builds up above the glottis. A phonological definition focuses on how the sound functions within a language. In this view, a vowel is defined as being syllabic, acting as the peak of a syllable. This creates a distinction between vowels and semivowels, which may sound like vowels but do not form the syllable peak.

To understand how these sounds differ, linguists look at several articulatory features. Traditionally, these features include tongue height, tongue backness, and lip rounding. Daniel Jones developed the cardinal vowel system to map these dimensions. He used a schematic quadrilateral to show how different positions create different qualities.

While this model is still used in teaching, it is not perfectly accurate. Scientist Peter Ladefoged noted that early researchers thought they were describing tongue position. In reality, they were describing formant frequencies, which are the specific acoustic properties of the sound.

One major dimension is vowel height, which refers to the vertical position of the tongue or jaw. In close vowels, also called high vowels, the tongue is positioned near the palate. In open vowels, also called low vowels, the jaw is open and the tongue is low. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) recognizes six degrees of height, though few languages use them all. The Kensiu language, spoken in Malaysia and Thailand, is highly unusual. It is the only known language that contrasts true mid vowels with both close-mid and open-mid vowels. Height is the most important feature in all researched spoken languages.

Another dimension is tongue backness, which describes the horizontal position of the tongue. Front vowels, such as "i," have the tongue positioned toward the front of the mouth. Back vowels, such as "u," have the tongue positioned toward the back. The IPA defines five degrees of backness, ranging from front to back. However, no language is known to contrast more than three degrees of backness independently. Some English dialects may use five degrees, but they do so by combining backness with other features like height.

Roundedness is the third major dimension, referring to the shape of the lips. In many languages, rounding is a feature of mid to high back vowels. There are two distinct ways to round the lips. Endolabial rounding occurs when the lips protrude outward, making the inside of the lips visible. Exolabial rounding occurs when the lips are compressed or pulled inward. For example, the Japanese "u" is an exolabial back vowel. This makes it sound different from the English "u" sound. Swedish and Norwegian are unique because they use both types of rounding as distinctive features.

Understanding vowels connects us to the broader study of linguistics and human biology. Vowels are not just letters like "a" or "e," but complex physical and acoustic events. They involve the coordination of the vocal folds, the tongue, the jaw, and the lips. By studying how these parts move, we learn how different cultures organize sound. Whether through the complex height system of Kensiu or the rounding of Japanese, vowels show the incredible variety of human communication.
