The Volga Delta is a very special place in Russia. It is the largest river delta in all of Europe. 

The weather in the delta is very dry. This is called an arid climate. It does not rain very much at all. In January and July, there is less than one inch of rain. Strong winds often blow across the wide, open land. These winds can create long, straight dunes made of sand. Along the front of the delta, you will see mudflats and sandy shores. 
Scientists have found three different zones in this delta. The first zone has ridges called Baer's mounds. These mounds are named after a researcher named Karl Ernst von Baer. These ridges are made of clay and sand. They are between 1 and 3 meters high. Between these mounds are small lakes called limans. These lakes can be fresh or salty. 
The second zone is the main part of the delta. It is very flat with almost no hills. You can find old water channels and small dunes here. The third zone is under the water. It is a broad platform that goes out into the sea. The delta has grown much larger since the year 1880. Today, it covers about 14,000 square kilometers. 
Many animals call this delta their home. It is a very important place for water birds. You might see great white egrets or Dalmatian pelicans. This is the only place in Russia where you can find pink flamingos.

The climate in the delta is described as arid. This means the region is very dry with little rainfall. In normal years, January and July receive less than one inch of rain. Because the land is so open, strong winds often sweep across it. These winds can create linear dunes, which are long, straight ridges of sand. Along the front of the delta, the landscape includes muddy sand shoals and mudflats. You may also find coquina banks, which are made of shell fragments.
Scientists divide the delta into three distinct zones. The first zone contains elevated areas called Baer's mounds. These ridges are named after the researcher Karl Ernst von Baer. The mounds consist of clayey sands. They typically range from 1 to 3 meters in height. On average, they are about 2 meters tall. These mounds can be between 1 and 10 kilometers in length. 
Between these mounds lie depressions known as limans. The name comes from a Russian word for "small lake." These depressions fill with water to create fresh or saline bays. The height from a depression floor to a mound peak is usually 2 to 5 meters. These limans were once part of a much deeper river delta. Now they are separated from the fresh Volga waters. This isolation causes them to become increasingly saline, or salty. Together, they form a vast western substeppe area. This area is highly diverse due to varying levels of wetness.
The second zone is the delta proper. This area has very little relief, meaning it is mostly flat. The elevation is usually less than one meter. In this zone, you will find active and abandoned water channels. There are also small dunes and algal flats. The third zone is the submarine part of the delta. It is a broad platform that extends out into the offshore waters of the Caspian Sea.
The history of the delta shows significant physical changes. The area has grown much larger during the 20th century. This growth happened because of changes in the Caspian Sea level. In 1880, the delta covered only 10,000 square kilometers. Today, it covers approximately 14,000 square kilometers. The width of the delta is about 40 kilometers. 
Wildlife is a major part of the delta's significance. It is designated as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The delta supports many species like Dalmatian pelicans and great white egrets. It is also the only place in Russia where flamingoes can be found. 
Despite its importance, the delta faces threats from human activity. Industrial and agricultural changes have caused significant wetland loss. Between 1984 and 2001, the delta lost 22% of its wetlands. This averages to about 0.8% of the wetlands lost every year. The Volga River also carries industrial waste and sediment into the northern Caspian Sea. These fertilizers can cause algal blooms on the water's surface. Efforts to protect the area began early in the 1900s. The Astrakhan Nature Reserve was established in 1919 to help preserve this unique ecosystem.
