This event deeply influenced Lenin's turn toward radical politics.

Lenin became a dedicated follower of Marxism. Marxism is a political theory based on the writings of Karl Marx. It focuses on the struggles between different social classes. Lenin studied these ideas while living in Samara and Saint Petersburg. He disagreed with the Narodnik movement. The Narodniks believed peasants could build socialism through small communes. Lenin argued that the urban working class, or proletariat, must lead the revolution. He believed Russia was moving from feudalism toward capitalism. This distinction became a core part of his political identity.

His revolutionary activities often put him at odds with the law.

These actions fundamentally altered the Russian economy and society.

Following the revolution, a violent Russian Civil War broke out. The Bolsheviks fought against various anti-Bolshevik and separatist armies. During this period, the government centralized power within the Communist Party. They used the "Red Terror" to suppress political opposition. This period involved the imprisonment and death of tens of thousands of people. To stabilize the economy after a famine, Lenin introduced the New Economic Policy in 1921. This policy reversed some earlier strict rules. By 1922, the Soviet Union was officially formed, uniting several non-Russian nations.

Lenin's health declined toward the end of his life.
